In all my actual records on my (Toncre-Orig. French)Toncray Tonkery I have never found any using that spelling. It was americanized into toncray. the Tonkery came about in ca 1840 when in set adult twins one retained Toncray other chose Tonkery sp.
I must guess the TONQUARY is totally different surname.
Sorry , wish I could help.

Colonel Toncre

I remember my Mother and my Aunts speaking of him, always as “Colonel Toncre” and that he was buried in Rushville, Illinois. There is/was a statue of him at his grave site. He was seated on a horse, holding a sword, sort of like St. Louis.

I may be incorrect that he was a Confederate Colonel. The reason I say that is I can remember my Aunt, who was born in 1900 singing “Marching through Georgia” to me while bouncing me on her knee. Make no mistake about it, my mother and her sisters, and my grandmother Gardiner were Southern Women, though.

He is definitely on my Grand Mother's husband’s side.
Her name was Catherine Elizabeth Manning Gardiner. She was born in Vincennes, IN.

Her husband was Herbert Gardiner. I believe this is where the Colonel may come into the family. Possibly Herbert Gardiner's Father or Grandfather. I am researching where Herbert was born. One document says Rushville, IL, and another says Kansas. I'm pretty sure it is Rushville, but the records there are very poor. Herbert had one sister, Carrie. She was a schoolteacher, and taught "good manners and decorum to young ladies".

My Mother: Agnes Cecelia Gardiner Gaffigan
Aunts: Helen Mary Gardiner Catherine Gardiner.

Father Joseph Patrick Gaffigan
Mother Agnes Cecelia Gaffigan

Grand Father/Mother Paternal: Patrick Joseph Gaffigan (Welsh)
Grand Mother: Mary Grey or Gray: Irish

If you think you have any information you can share, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you

Terry

Hi,
Where did you come up with spelling Tonquary?
Between my cousins self (all desc of three of Daniel Toncray's children) over the yrs we have managed to fill out Daniel's desc's. Frankly I do not recognize any of surnames you give.
I am giving my email
in case you find anything that might give better clues.

Terry, I am almost certain the one you are talking about is Russell Toncray. Russell was born in Washington County, Virginia and migrated to Illinois where he took up land in Schuyler County. Rushville is the county seat for Schuyler County. I don't have my records right at hand but if you will E-mail me directly at toncrayjr@aol.com I will send all the information I have on Russell and his family. Some of his descendants are now
living in Kansas.

Russell married Delilah Johnson in Virginia. I have the date and the minsister for that event. I also have the data on the land Russell settled on in Schuyler County.

He died very young, I don't remember for certain but it was like 44 or so. Maybe even younger. I have a number of the children of the marriage also. But, I am very interest in the bit about a statue to his memory. I was born and raised in Illinios. Lived in Lockport until 1949 when my father died. We moved down state to Canton after his death. There were several TOncray families in Canton. Ora Dale Toncray still lives there. Robert Toncray, a nephew of Dale Toncray now lives in Springfield or Eugene, OR. I live in Virginia Beach, VA. Other Toncray family members live in Virginia, Oregon, Illinois, Missouri, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Nevada, California, Colorado and Washington.

I will be waiting for your answer. Jim Toncray.

Meredith, I am wondering if you might be able to help
me. The parents of my ancestor Nicholas Kline (who married Sarah Tupper
daughter of Thomas Tupper Perenthia Jacqua of CT).
Nicholas was baptised as son of Conrad Klyn and Margaret Toncray on
January 15, 1771 with baptismal sponsors James Robertson and
wife Rachel Bresee in southern Columbia County right on the Dutchess County
line. I think Margaret Toncray may have died before 1773 and Conrad remarried. Other
children for this couple that I have been able to find are
at the Gallatin Reformed Chuch 20 March 1763 baptism for Anthony with
sponsors John Toncrey Rebecca Kline/12 May 1764 Jacob with sponsors Adam Huysradt wife Eva
Geertie Dings/1 May 1768 Rebecca with sponsors Abraham Decker and wife Engle Bresee.
Toncrey is spelled Tankre/Tankree/Tankerin/Tavary. Conrad Kline leased a
farm on the Livingston Manor and in 1792 that farm was turned over to
Daniel Toncrey. Any information that you might have on this
family would be sincerely appreciated. There are other Toncreys in
the church records for Columbia County. karen miller in california

Hi, Karen,
I also live in Calif. in Sacramento area. I gave/forwarded your message to my cousin, James Toncray Jr.in VA.
We have exchanged info about 5 years now I have another cousin, Rob't White in MD. We have exchanged for many years.
All 3 of us descend from 3 of Anthony Toncray Sr's children (that we know of)
If you will send your mailing address I will send you a report on Anthon William Toncray (Toncre orig) his descendants as we have found them.
Jim jkst emailed back and saidI am surprised too! I thought we had only Anthony, 3 sons and a dau and now there are more Toncrays thanwe, or I, thought.
See, you are an unsuspected "ant hill" stirred up and new ones pouring out!
That is why I love this genealogy. You dig and dig, for years,l think you may have a handle on things and then something utterly new pops up!
Jim said he would get back to me in couple days as he wants to go "surfing".
So hoping to hear from you I am,
Meredith G.
