I am looking for the family of my grandfather's sister, Rubye Viola Hargus who married William J. Tonahill before 1930 in TX. William lived in Anderson County….he was on the 1900 Anderson Co, Tx census with his family. From Anderson County, I have found out that William and Rubye lived and died in that area. But the Hargus connection is where I come in.

Here is the family I am interested in:

James Walter Hargus born Jan 16, 1881 Hood Co, Tx, died July 25, 1927 Houston, Tx
Lennis Oma Turns born July 17, 1883 Ellis Co, Tx, died Jan 22, 1973 San Antonio, Tx
James & Lennis married June 6, 1900 Ellis Co, Tx

Children:
1. Burr Walter, b. 1901 Italy, Ellis Co, Tx; d. 1974 Norwalk, Huron Co, Ohio
2. Lucile Oma, b. March 05, 1902 Italy, Ellis Co, Tx; d. Nov 07, 1977 San Antonio, Bexar Co, Tx.
3. Rubye Viola, b. June 09, 1904 Italy, Ellis Co, Tx; d. July 27, 1976 Anderson Co, Tx; m. William J. Tonahill, JR b. July 04, 1899 Texas; d. April 25, 1962 Anderson Co, Tx.
4. Roy, b. Oct 25, 1905 Italy, Ellis Co, Tx d. Oct 23, 1924 Houston, Tx
5. James Earl, b. August 20, 1909 Italy, Ellis Co, Tx; d. May 16, 1990 Houston, Harris Co, Tx. (MY GRANDFATHER)
6. Gertrude, b. Abt. 1913, Italy, Ellis Co, Tx.

My father and uncles do not know much about their father's sisters and brothers. I would like to find out more about my grandfather's family. Any connections, please contact me.
Thanks

Do you have any further information on William J. Tonahill? I'm searching for a William J. Tonahill from Houston, Texas. He was married to Zelma Duke in 1927. He had been in the Navy and was quite a ladies man as he was married about 8 times. I have a birth date of 1902 and a death date of around 1960.

thanks

Hi,

The William J. Tonahill I was looking for (and found) was born July 4, 1899 (Texas) and died April 25, 1962 in Palestine, Anderson Co, Tx. He married my grandfather's sister Rubye Hargus sometime after 1924, and they lived in Palestine as far as I can tell. They are both buried in the Cemetery in Palestine (I have pictures of the gravestones).
I did find William on the 1900 Anderson Co, Tx census with his parents. His father's name was Joseph (prob William Joseph), and was born in Miss and his mother was born in Ga.
I don't think we have the same William.....sorry. Wish I could help more....but I don't have any more....

I did some more checking.....was your William J Tonahill married to a Lila sometime before 1930 TX? The 1930 Lamar Co, Tx census shows a William J. Tonahill age 30 with wife Lila, and sis-in-law Katherine Long. They had been married about 3 yrs, according to the census.

I could not find William on the 1910 or 1920 census....yet.

I don't know exactly when William and Rubye were married, but it's possible she may not have been his only wife. We lost track of my grandfather's sisters and brothers after their parents divorced around 1925.....

All I have on her is that she and William lived and are buried in Palestine, Tx.

I agree that we have two different William's. I find mine in Harris Co., TX in 1920 (age 16) living with his brother James D. (age 18) and their mother Althea and step father Jess E. Stramen(?) It's hard to read. William's father was born in Texas and his mother in Tennessee. I haven't been able to find him in 1910. There is a William Tonahill listed in the 1930 census in Harris Co., TX, but I don't have access to the exact page.

Hi!
My mother-in-law and I were looking through her mother's wedding book and came across "cousins", The Tonahills. This is not a family we are familiar with. Reading your post, I think we have the same family in mind.

These notes we read were signed W.J. and Ruby Tonahill and another one was signed Albert and Ruby. The stationery one note was written was from a company with letterhead that stated; Tonahill & Reagan, Palestine, Texas.

My husband's grandmother was Nettie Tucker and she married Louis Owen Litherland in Houston, on 5 June 1922. Nettie's parents were Thomas Brinsfield Tucker and Emma Eugenia Senette. Thomas and Emma were descendants of Albert and Mary Ellen Smith Whitcomb, they were cousins that married.

Anyway, we are wondering the connection between these two families. We are not sure if they are connected through the Litherlands, Tuckers, Senettes, or Whitcombs.

Hope you can enlighten us!
Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

None of those names ring a bell, at least not with the Hargus side I am researching. Looks like if it is a cousin connection it could be through the Tonahill side.
All I have is that my grandfather's sister Ruby was married to William J. Tonahill. They married sometime after 1930, and lived in Palestine, Anderson Co, Tx and are buried there in the Palestine Cemetery. I also have my great-aunt Ruby's obit from the Palestine paper, and there is no mention of those names you mention.
I had found William Joseph Tonahill Jr in 1900 Anderson Co, Tx with parents Joseph & Fanny.
I think next time I am at the Clayton Gen Library in Houston I will look up his death cert for his parents' names. Maybe his mother Fanny had one of the surnames you mentioned.

Looking on the 1900 census I see also that the Joseph Tonahill family shows this...

Joseph Tonahill Head b.Jan 1866 in Ms married 10 yrs
Fanny wife b. Sep 1869 in Ga married 16 yrs had 6 children of which 5 still living in 1900
Eddie G. Garner stepson b. Sep 1884 in Tx
Virgil stepson b. Feb 1886 in Tx
John stepson b. Sep 1888 in Tx
Ruby Tonahill dau b. Sep 1891 in Tx
Willie son b. Jul 1899 in Tx

So obviously this was 2nd marriage for Fannie...her 1st was to someone named Garner. Also note..interestingly William had a sister named Ruby...and years later married my grandfather's sister Ruby(e) Hargus.

Is there anyone else researching the Tonahill family that you know of AND would you mind posting the obit you mentioned?

Thanks,
Jana
