My grandmother's maiden name was Toma, which I was told was a Romanian name, for "Thomas," after the disciple. Her family came from Arad and Nadloc, in Romania; she immigrated to the US at the age of seven. Although she was of mixed Hungarian and Romanian descent, Toma definitely sounds more Romanian than Magyar; I get the impression that there was a lot of crosspollination between the two cultures, since my greatgrandfather spoke both languages fluently. They settled in Northern Indiana in the US.

My grandmother, also maiden name Toma emigrated to the U.S. 1914. Married name Sirb, changed to Sam when husband became citizen. Settled in Northern Indiana, what was then East Gary, Now Portage. Born in Belin Romania, County currently Covasna. I know you posted 4 years ago but I just discovered it. Any information you can share?

Sorry, I've been out of town on business the past few days.

Hmmm...just not sure about this...our family (Dan and Elena Toma family) came from a different part of Romania (county of Arad, towns of Arad and Nadloc, on the border with Hungary---and my great-grandfather spoke Magyar as well as Romanian). I do think Toma is a pretty common name in Romania, by the way. It is interesting that both families settled in the Gary/Portage area, though, and I do know we had some connection (in-laws? cousins?) with some Sams. I think there were a lot of Romanians who settled in that area---someone tells my there is actually a Romanian Orthodox church somewhere around. If our families weren't related, they may still have known each other.

I'd be happy to post your request to our MyFamily site, and see if we can make a connection for you.

One request: would you mind giving me your grandparents' full names (or you can e-mail them to la_kathykat@myfamily.com if you don't want to post them here)? Any additional information I have might help me track this down.

Thank you for responding. Since I posted my last inquiry, I have discovered my people may have come from Beliu, Arad not Belin Covasna. My Grandfather was Andrew Sirb, changed to Sam. My Grandmother was Flora or Florita Toma. Both were born Feb 25, 1894. She in Beliu, He in Bel, Bihar, Megye. Andrew's Father was Theodor born 1863 in Beliu, (Belin?) Mother was Flora Popa, 1866 Beliu, (Belin?) Grandmother's parents were John Toma, 1860 in Beliu (Belin?) and Sophia Budyan born 1864 in Peykata Romania. Flora Toma immigrated through Ellis Island in April 1914 on the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. How Grandfather immigrated I do not know. They lived on the 2700 block of Blake Road which is now Portage, Indiana.

Thanks so much for any help.

My sister Betty Jean was able to go to Romania to visit with the "relatives" my dad found while he was there in the early 90's doing government work! Now my brother David's daughter is there in Romania on an LDS mission. I hope she can find some family history there! I love Uncle Paul! He is always so fun to be around! I hope his health is well, and I hope to see him again sometime! I remember your family coming to Duchesne for visits. Your brother Chris? is close to my age!

I sure hope we can find more family history from Romania!
