searching for hungarian past

I am searching to find out the nationality background of the Toma surname and how it made it's way to Okinawa. I believe after doing research that it is an Italian/Hungarian surname.

I am a Toma of Okinawan descent. I was always led to believe that it was a native Okinawan name. It is a phonetically simple name and have heard it pop up in middle-eastern, European, Latin and Pacific cultures. I have heard stories of blue-eyed native Okinawans, many believe they are descendants of European traders. I've been told that many Dutch people traded extensively with Okinawa.

My grandfather, Nicola Toma, was born in Italy and came to the U.S. in the 1920's. He lived his life in Clifton, NJ and owned a chicken market in Passaic, NJ. I am surprised to read that Toma is also of Hungarian descent.

When my grandfather came from Hungary in 1904, the immigration officers on Ellis Island misspelled his name. It then became Toma. Many people mistake us for being Italian.

Christine, where in Italy did your Tomas come from. Mine came from the Parma region in northern Italy

My grandfather came from Romania in 1907 and his last name was Toma. I am having a hard time finding any information about him or his family. You mentioned that immigration missspelled his name...how did they spell it?

I also have Toma ancestors from Romania. I would like to learn more about them but have been running into road blocks. Any information would help.
