There are several groups of Toma surnames in Europe, not necessarily bearing mutual relationships. In Italy, the main group comes from Apulia (south east) and should be originally Balkanian (probably Albania). Toma surname also appears in Northern Italy (Piedmont and Veneto), partly as a result of immigration from the south, partly as 'native' families. You can check its geographical diffusion at http://gens.labo.net

The Toma surname have the origins slave. The Hungarian Toma population had the nationality slovac nord-slave. My great-grandmother was Maria Toma (1893-1963) emmigrated in the U.S.A. in 1902 from North-Est-Hungary Szilvás-village with her mother Anna Toma and her father Mihaly Toma. Maria removed in Hungary in 1911 but her family rested in the U.S.A. I searche my ancestry in the U.S.A., Who know anythings from the Mihaly Toma family's descendants in the U.S.A. please e.mail-me because my familytree.

What is the given name for Toma you are looking for?

My aunt Katie (Viland) came from Hungary to Cleveland early 1900's. Married a Joe Toma. They moved to PA and had son named Eddie.

Hello, from my grandmother I know, that her sister Julia, born Kanda was married to John Toma. They lived in Cleveland and had a son John (born probably between 1915 to 1925). After 1950 they lost contact to Toma family. Julia Kanda was born before 1896 in Kovesd now Eastern Slovakia at that time Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
