Hi, Merita(?). Not trying to make a pest of myself but I just sent you a long email using my home email address and it dawned on me that I might be able to contact you this way instead. Saw your old postings from 2000 and 2001 and had some questions regarding Seth, Catherine, Pheabe (who is she?) and possibly William Tolbert. I am the Great, Great, Great, Grandson of William I. Tolbert of Lycoming County, PA. Hope to hear from you, Thanks in advance, Bruce R. Tolbert, Florissant, MO

OK, I will keep this as simple as I can. I am a Tolbert living in St. Louis, MO now. As near as I can tell from records that I have, a family bible that I have from the early 1800's and a sheet of paper found in that bible, my Grandfather was Ernest N. Tolbert from Muncy, PA. The sheet of paper says, and I quote: "William Irvin Tolbert, father, William Irvin Tolbert, grandfather, William Irvin Tolbert, greatgrandfather - Elizabeth Hoof Tolbert, grandmother, Elizabeth Donkelberry (sp), grandmother. Well I ask aunt Agnes Harter and this is what she told me - they liked the name (I presume William Irvin Tolbert) all alike". I know that my grandfather was born in Muncy, PA, in 1887, and from the research I have done so far on Ancestry.com most of the Tolbert's that I know of came from Lycoming County, PA! I have a William Tolbert, born around 1774, living in Muncy Creek, PA in 1850. I have a William Tolbert/Tabbert/Talbert, born between 1812 and 1822 & married to an Elizabeth (I presume Hoof) in 1850 and 1860, living in Muncy Creek, PA and finally I have Irvin Tolbert or William I Tolbert living in Muncy Creek, Lycoming County, PA in 1860, 1870 and 1880. The last William Irvin must have got tired of using the same name because when he died in 1898, his tombstone in the Muncy Cemetery just says Irvin Tolbert (I have a photo of the tombstone obtained from the cemetery). I thought I had most everything figured out until I started finding out that some of the PA Tolbert's apparently went to Steuben County, NY in the early early 1800's, if not earlier. I refer to info found in the History of Steuben County, NY published in 1879 that refers to a Catherine, daughter of William Tolbert, an early settler from Pennsylvania marrying a Jacob Bartholomew. Also, the Directory of Steuben County, NY, published in 1891 also refers to Catherine and also mentions an Asa Tolbert as being one of the first setters. Help me out here folks! I need specific info on the first William Irvin Tolbert and if possible, the second one too! Any info, and I mean any, would surely be appreciated! If I don't figure this out soon I guess I'll get in my truck and drive to PA (Lycoming County) and try doing some research on my own. Thanks is advance. Bruce R. Tolbert

Hi,

I'm a descendant of John Talbot [Talbert] Chambers who appears to have been the son of John Chambers of early 1800 Milo, Yates Co., NY.

John Chambers, Sr., removed with his son to Ontario, Canada, about 1803.

To make a long story short, John Chambers daughter's, Mrs. David Briggs and Mrs. Alexander Nichiols, were neighbors in 1810 of William Fastbinder along with Malachi Davis.

A Tolbert married Malachi Davis' grandson William Davis, Jr.

William Fastbinder is next to Saml. Tolbert in Lycoming Co., PA, in 1800.

Also, the Chambers attended the Methodist Meetings in Milo, and most if not all of the early attendants were from the Whitpain, Montgomery Co., PA, area.

There was a William Torbert who lived in Montgomery Co., PA, in 1790, who appears to have been the son of Samuel Torbert and Elizabeth Lamb of Newtown, Bucks Co., PA. The early leader of the Methodists of Milo, NY, Samuel Kress was once a resident of Newtown.

It is my belief that William Tolbert/Torbert, the son of Samuel, removed from Montgomery Co., PA, to Muncy, Lycoming Co., PA, where other members of the Torbert family removed. Some used the name Torbert and others used Tolbert and some were descendants without the Tolbert name.

The descendsants then of the Muncy Tolberts were of the line of William Torbert/Tolbert who was born in 1727. This is what I think.

Samuel Torbert, Sr., was born about 1695 in Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland and died between February 12, 1777 - July 1778 in Newtown, Newtown Township, Bucks County,Pennsylvania. Samuel Torbert, Sr., married before 1722 in Northern Ireland Elizabeth Lamb who was born about 1699 in Tarbert, County Clare, Ireland. She died in Newtown, Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

I believe that John Chambers,, Sr., married a daughter born about 1747 of William Tolbert, Sr., born about 1727.

There were Dunkleburger's in Muncy in 1800.

Interesting info you have provided, especially the early info about the Torbert's comming from Northern Ireland and also having an Elizabeth Lamb born in Tarbert, County Clare, Ireland. I also have noticed the Tolbert/Torbert variation (as well as Talbert)and will file this info away with what I already have.

I agree that it appears (taken with a grain of salt) that the Tolbert/Torbert's may have gone from Montgomery County PA to Muncy in Lycoming County since this is where most of my father's relatives appear to have come from. I will look into the William Torbert who was born in 1727 and check out the Newtown, Newtown Township, Bucks County PA info you have provided as to places of death for both Samuel & Elizabeth Torbert.

I have a major problem with the spelling of my relative shown as Elizabeth Donkelbery on a piece of paper I believe was done by my grandfather, Ernest N. Tolbert. The spelling of the last name could be Dunkleburger, Dunkeleberry, etc.; I just don't know. I have noted the Dunkleburger's in Muncy in 1800 and believe that may be the correct last name but don't really know. If it was my grandfather, on my father's side, who wrote the names on the piece of paper, it must have been done in the late 1800's because of the many misspellings on the paper (ie: grate granfather). It just has the look of a childs writing, although it is in cursive. Thanks much for the info and will definetly look into some of the connections you have mentioned. Thank you, Bruce R. Tolbert

Bruce, Can you tell me a little about your William? I am in Asa Tolbert line from Stueben County, NY. Have been away from looking into new info for some time. Asa had a brother William ( Lycoming, Pa) that I have very little info about. I beleive the wife may have been Octavia or something like that. Thanks for any help. Pat

I have a John Tolbert Chambers who was it appears from Milo, Yates Co., NY.

Sarah Tolbert who married William Davis, Jr., was also in a history of Yates Co., a resident of Milo, NY.

I think John Tolbert Chambers and Sarah Tolbert were related.

I keep looking but am not finding anything more.

I had thought that Sarah Tolbert was connected with the Tolberts/Torberts of Bucks Co., PA, but more needs to be learned.
