Believe it or not, there are Tolberts from Liberia (West Africa!) who are descended from the Tolberts of South Carolina ! In 1869 they left the U.S to return to Africa on a ship called the Azor which they had purchased along with several hundred other Black South Carolinians in a group called the Liberian Exodus Movement. Daniel Frank Tolbert age 27 with his wife Sarah and 9 year old son William Richard Tolbert were from a little town called "Ninety Six" in Abbeville County, which is a few miles from Greenwood. Daniel Frank Tolbert left siblings in the U.S. If anyone has information on this branch of the Tolberts or on the Liberian Exodus Movement, I would love to hear about it.Many of the Liberian Tolberts are now back in the U.S and will be holding a family reunion in virginia in July 2000.e-mail Richard Tolbert at Angelistra@aol.com or phone/fax me at 914 633 1193.

All of my life I've heard stories that some of my father's great-great-uncles went to Liberia and that those brothers who stayed behind changed their name to Talbert. I have a few cousins named Tolbert. My father was from Mississippi. Have your heard a similar story? If so, then we are distant cousins. Denise

Richard, have you heard of the following Tolberts in your family line? Sidney, Annie, Grace, Elizabeth, Sherman, Jerry, Amos and Major.
|
Richard, twins also are common in our family. In one generation, we had three sets!
|
Grace, my great grandfather was Sidney Tolbert. Could it be the same as the Sidney you named? I believe he lived in Oklahoma,Colorado or Texas but I know there were relatives in Tennessee and Virginia among other states. I do know that he had two brothers, one named Raymond. Please let me know what you think. It seems like there are a lot of people with the Talbot/Tolbert/Talbert lineage.

Yes, I've heard similar stories. From my father, Gene Tolbert. He told me that there were two brothers that got into a fight and one changed his last name. My family is from Mississippi my grandfather Billie Tolbert his children, Tammy Tawater, Gene Tolbert, Robert Tolbert, their children, Jill Tolbert, Robin McClellan, Leah Tolbert(me), Katy McClenahan, and finally Taylor McClenahan. And we were all born and raised in Philadelphia, Mississippi except for the two McClenahans and we are all currently living here.

Wow. My brother has researched our family history and says we are related to the McClellans. I will ask him if he knows of the names you mentioned. Wow!!! We could be related. Please keep my e-mail address lillhammer@yahoo.com. I would love to keep in contact with you if we are, in fact, cousins. Thanks, Denise

There are three McClellans in my family their names are Randy McClellan, Robin McClellan, and Mattie Burgin McClellan. They are husband and wife if you were related to them you would be nothing to me. But you may be related to my cousins.

Richard; I just got to and read your complete message and realize you know more about the Liberian Tolberts than I do, (smile). I had a book, about 15 years ago, which listed all of the passengers on all of the ships that went to Liberia, including the Azor. I have misplaced this book, but will find another copy.
My family is from Texas, but we were always told there was a connection.

Hi Evelyn: Glad to hear from you. You may indeed be related as Dr Harold Tolbert, my African American cousin to whom I am definitely related had a brother in Texas who was a famous jazz musician I believe and later a professor of music. Rings a bell? Anyway would love to hear from you, so you can email me directly at Angelistra@ aol.com or call/fax me at 914 633 7240. By the way, I had a first cousin in Liberia who was also called Evelyn Tolbert! Richard Tolbert
