Hi, Have no info going that far back. my grandfather was Pete Toland from Seymour,Mo. His father, Dempsey Toland. Other than that don't have much to go on. I think they came from Iowa or Ill. and some from Kentucky. Grandpa Pete was born in l897. Do you have info from your history re: that area? Thanks, Dolores

In 1850 Pike County,IL, Hadley Twp. An 8 year old boy is listed. The name looks like Demby. I wonder if this might be the Dempsey Toland, grandfather that Denise is searching for. I have some information on this family. Please contact me personally if you think there might be a match here.

Hi Barbara, Thanks for the reply. I think there might be a connection. The time frame is right. My mom is trying to remember times etc. for me. Do you have the genealogy line from Dempsy back? I know his father was James benjamin but not before that. If you could let me know I would appreciate it. Thanks, Dolores

The father of the child Denby or Dempsy is Smith Toland born and married in PA William and Thomas were born in PA. 17 and 14. After that they must have moved to IL. James, Francis, Demby, Nancy J, John, George, and Rachel were born in IL. Smith Toland married Rhoda Burkhead in 1847 apparently he had that large family. In 1860 Dempsey or Donely was 19, John 14, Washinton 13,Smith 5, Nathaniel 2, and a young male 6/12 whose name I could not read. In 1880 there was Mathewleel ( I think that should be Mahalaleel, a family name carried through all our Burkhead lines) Smith, Jr.Henry, Harry or Harvey, and Bessie Ann. He certainly fathered a bunch of kids. Oh yes, his first daughter Elizabeth Toland married another Burkhead. I've just started this family so plan to do a lot more research on them, maybe we can match up at some point. Barbara in OK

I'm sure there is a connection as there doesn't seem to be many Tolands now. Will keep in touch on this site. Please do the same. Thanks, Dolores s.w. Mo.

I'm doing a Family Tree report with my daughter and was looking up the name Toland as that was my father's name. What's weird is that my husband's family is from Quincy Ill. My dad, James Porter Toland was from Ponca, Nebraska b. 1921. His nephew's name was William (sister married to Behnke) I'm just wondering if I could be related to my husband!
