I know that this message has been up for some time but I have been looking at the Clonmany Parish records and came across the following:

John Toland (Roxtown, Clonmany) married Fanny McGranaghan on
25/1/1898. Witnesses were James Devlin (Tullagh, Clonmany)and Cecily Duffy (Dunaff). Celebrant was Rev. William McLaughlin. John Toland's father is named as Owen Toland and Fanny's father is named as James McGranaghan.

The 1901 Census of Ireland shows that John Toland aged 27 was married to Fanney Toland 27 yrs also and they had two children - James aged 2 and Mary aged 6mths. They were living in Kinnea which is the older townland name for Roxtown, Urris, Clonmany (House no 1 in this townland on the census). John's occupation is listed as a Farmer / Blacksmith and his wife Fanney's occupation is a seamstress.

The 1911 Census of Ireland shows that John Toland is now 37 and his wife Fanny is 37 also. Their children are as follows: James (age 12), Mary (age 10), John (age 8), Barbera (age 6), Hugh (age 3) and Patrick (age 8mths). John's occupation is noted as a Blacksmith as is his wife Fanny.

Hope this helps regardless of the long time delay!

Esther Ellen Carroll was my husbands aunt, she passed away in 1979. She was more like a grandmother to my husband Jim whose father was Chester Lewis Carroll. He passed away in 1973. Their father, George was killed and their ggrandfather John R. Carroll died in Andersonville Prison. Do you have any family pictures? We have very few, some of which my husband does not know who they are. My husband would like a picture of John R. Carroll who was in the 78th illinois company I during the Civil War. D. Carroll

Jim Carroll's father was Chester Lewis Carroll. Esther Ellen was his aunt (a grandmother figure to him). Thank you for all your helpful information. What part of the toland/markel/carroll line are you? Do you have any more on William F. Toland line? I am trying to do more on my husbands family (I'm retired now so having fun) any help will be apprecated.

In my research of the Toland family I cannot find where our William Fenton Toland is, or who were his parents. In the 1880 census he says his father is from Virginia and mother from Pennsylvania. I have the Toland family line from Penn.some of which do marry into the Carroll's however not our William F. Toland So, any information?

Surnames: Toland, Markell, Folland
Markells and Tolands get confusing as they appear in different spellings basic facts: William Toland born29 May 1835 died age 77 buried on 31 Jan 1913 Beardstown, Cass County, Illinois. married Ellen David Markell July 1859 In Koschiusko Indiana I beleive this is where they show up as Markle and Tuland 1870 Census they are found in Pierceton, Koschusko, Indiana
1880 they are found in Oakland, Schuyler County Illinois, the interesting census is 1850 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio he is living with the family of Jereemaih Folland-when I look at the written out census their F looks like a T to me. I had traced him to Clark County Ohio. This is what I have right now- I just retired, and I am again working on the genealogy I started before-- We had a fire I had three totes -only one had the top on it-- the open tops were too damaged to use-- I need to get into the closet and see what might be in the remaining tote-one thing to remember is that there is a Toland in the same area in Illinois that fights in thee Civil War that is not our William If you have anymore information please reply to me
