My father, who was of Finnish descent, was named David Edward Toivsen. I know nothing about his family, as I was told he was born out of wedlock in 1908. Do you think that our name could be a misspelling or are many names similar in Finland?

HI,
I could not find a Toivsen in the census at all! Perhaps it was Toivonen? It means Toivo's son. What was his mothers name, he should be in the 1930 census for what ever state he was born in.

Thanks for any sort of information...but I believe it will be impossible for me to get anything on him. Born Nov 28, 1914 (I made an error on his birth year...putting in my mother instead) in Staten Island NY. His baptismal certificate, which is written in Finnish, does seem to say TOIVSEN (you know the fancy writting back then) I did not know his mothers name...as she abandoned him when he was about 2..he then lived with some people named "Tulonen" also in Staten Island. John and Ida Tulonen were the only grandparents I knew..and they were both gone by the time I was 7. Ida was born in 1861.
