Hi. I have a James Tohill (born abt 1870) that was from Magherafelt, Co. Derry. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Tasmania but escaped while being transported.
Could this be your James?

Hi

I am researching James Anthony Tohill (b. abt 1838) in Maghera, Co Derry. Parents were John Tohill and Rose McKeone.

He migrated to Australia in 1858 with his brother Francis. Prior to migration, he had been a policeman for a few years.

Unconfirmed connection to a Henry Tohill, publican in Alexandra, Otago, New Zealand.

Does this line up with your data at all?

regards

He's not my James. I think your best bet will be contacting "IrishSnake". Good luck with your search.
