I am related to a Thomas Tothill who was born c. 1835 in Lockport, NY d. 3-3-1917 m. Elizabeth Vickers b. circa 1835 in Saxilby, England d. 4-16-1865. After 1865, he married Jennie Barnes Coe; I have no info on the dates of her birth or death. Thomas Tothill had at least 2 children by his first wife; they were: 1) Mary Catherine Tothill b.7-12-1858 in Lockport, NY d. 1-6-1943 in Glen Ellyn, IL. m.7-12-1881 to William E. Penney, Sr.; 2) William Searle Tothill b. 1-12-1861 in Chicago, IL d. 12-27-1941 m. Katherine Gibbs 4-26-1893. There is also a Willie Coe listed as a child on a list that was passed down by a great aunt who researched the family tree and on that list it does not indicate if Coe may have been his middle name or if Jennie Coe already had a son when she married Thomas Tothill. I do not have any dates of birth or death for Willie Coe.
Mary Catherine Tothill and William E. Penney, Sr. (He was b. 4-8-1856 or 1857 in Kalamazoo, MI and died 1-24-1925 in Chicago, IL) had 5 children. They were 1) William E. Penney, Jr. (my grandfather) b. 6-23-1882 in IL d. 9-4-1955 in IL m. Ethel Mae Myrick; 2) Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" Penney b. 2-13-1885 in IL d. unknown m. 11/3/1909 to Joe Forsythe 3) Martha Grace Penney b. 3-31-1889 in IL m. date unknown to Jim Watson d. 6-14-1972; 4)Mae Agnes Penney b. 1-18-1887 in IL d. in Dec. 1975 in CA; she worked as a stenographer and researched the family tree several years before her death; 5) George b. 10-2-1890 d. unknown; however, my aunt has told me that he is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Whittier, CA m. 6-1-1910 (wife's name not known).
William Searle Tothill was born 1-12-1861 in Chicago d. 12-29-1941 m. 4-26-1893 to Katherine Gibbs; I show they had 3 children Luella Mae Tothill b. 5-9-1894 d. ? William Tothill b. 1895 d. ? George A. b. 2-8-1897 d. ?
What I do not know for sure is just how these other 2 William Tothills fit into the family tree. There was a William S. Tothill b. 12-25-1844 d. 8-14-1934 m. Mary Jewell; he was born in Birmingham, England and so was she. [ I think he may have been a brother to Thomas Tothill.] There was a William Robert Tothill b. 10-14-1877 in Chicago d. 5-18-1929 in Chicago and never married. His death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as Mary I. Snowhook and his father was William S. Tothill and it shows that both parents were born in Birmingham, England; whether William S. Tothill had other children, I do not know. There are a number of Tothills buried in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston; all of the lots were bought at the same time by the same individual. [ I need to either visit, call or write to the cemetery and request the names of the Tothills that are buried there. It might interest you to know that William S. Tothill started the W.S. Tothill Company in Chicago and he manufactured playground; in fact, he was one of the first suppliers of playground equipment for the Chicago Public Schools. I will have to look for the photocopy of the article that my aunt sent me about his death and then I will send you some more info. I hope this is helpful.
