I would like to hear from all Toghers in relation to the origin of thier family.
My family is from the Belmullet area (Kilmore & Kilcommon Parishes) of Co. Mayo, Ireland. The surname is quite common there.
I have found Toghers listed in at least 12 US States, UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada.
I am sure I have many extended relatives out there who may have more info than I do right now and we may be able to help each other. My record trail seems to end at my Great Grandfather circa 1840 -1860.
Please post replies here or e-mail me direct at: toghers@earthlink.net

My father Patrick Togher, born Dec 1920 was born in Binghamstown Belmullet. When he was 16 he came and remained in England until he died in 1992. I was very lucky and managed to trace his sister, (through the internet) who still lives there. I met her and many cousins when I visited there in 2001. I was made very welcome and I had a fantastic time. I wonder if somehow we are related??

hope to hear from you soon.

Hi ya,

My great grandfather was John Togher and he was born somewhere in Co. Mayo. All I now for definate is that he was working as a farm servant in Barnagh according to the 1901 census. Also living there was Mary Coyne, whom he married in Nov 1901 in Binghamstown. His father was also John. I have searched the census for the area and found 2 possibilites. Unfortunately I do not have any positive proof that either of the John Toghers listed are actually related. You might be able help with this.

I hope to hear from you soon.

My Father is Patrick Togher also. He was born in Drum, (Drunhill, Clogher) just south of Binghamstown in Mayo. His father was William Togher (grandfather also named William Togher).

I lived in Blacksod (about 15 miles to the south) in 1983 and met many of the relative (uncles, first cousins, etc). There are many Toghers in the area, many interrelated in some way. I am related to another branch of the clan via my mothers sisters who married Toghers from Drum (not directly related to my father). Only a few of the family live in Ireland now - several brothers and sisters emigrated to the UK and the United States.

I'd love to chat with any of you more about possible family relationships. Email me at GISMAPS@Hotmail.com

Hi, Stephen. I live in Massachusetts USA. My g-g-grandfather Patrick Togher married Mary Reddy (Ruddy?) in Kilteevan (Roscommon) in 1821. They had one child I know of, a son John, who was born <1847> in Mayo, and married Catherine Murray in 1868 in Kilmore Erris, Mayo. Their first two children, Patrick and John, were born in 1870 and 1873 respectively, also in Kilmore Erris. The family seems to have emigrated to Gateshead, Durham, England after 1873, but John and Catherine returned to Ireland, had more children, and emigrated to the US from Galway in 1883. The Toghers (then "Tucker") settled in Rhode Island and worked in the textile mills and railroads. I just took a trip to Binghamstown, and there are many of the family still there! Happy to trade any information. I visited the cemeteries on the Belmullet Peninsula, but ran out of time to locate living relatives. I am descended from John and Catherine's son Thomas. RR

Hello -

I am researching my gg-gm Mary Togher b. about 1829 in Mayo and her sister Catherine. Family story is that just before sailing to America from Galway Bay, Mary married a Rogan and settled in Baltimore and Catherine married James KiGallen and settled in Clinton, Iowa. I have confirmed their history in America, and now want to find who and where they were in Mayo. Please email if you come across these names.

Thanks!

Hi, Dennis. There may be a connection between your family and mine -- I'll
look through what I have and get back to you. My Toghers were from Belmullet Peninsula at least from 1830 through the early 1880s, and sailed from Galway to Boston in 1883. I have noticed that many of the Irish families from that time and place emigrated to Baltimore and the American midwest. Do you have any idea what attracted them to those particular areas? My family were textile workers (big in Massachusetts and Rhode Island at the time) and railroad workers (likewise). Going to America is a big enough decision; I would love to know more about why they decided to go where they did. In my case, I suspect that friends or other relatives had gone over before and my family had some idea of what awaited them as far as jobs, living, etc. I tried to get some information from older relatives while they were alive -- they did not seem to want to talk about that difficult time. Thanks for the response! I just arrived in Salt Lake City an hour ago and will be doing research Mon-Fri at the Family History Library ... mainly to try to make some headway on my many Irish brick walls. Togher is one of the names I will be focusing on.

Please keep in touch ...
