Wow, it has been a long time since anyone posted to the board! I received this e-mail the other day- and was wondering if anyone came across anything like this in their research:
"I became convinced by the way the same person was named Toewe and Toebe and Toeve at different times in the same church record."

Take, for example - Martin Toewe. Farm worker, Martin died at age 73 in Charlottenhoff on 3 Dec 1847. In that record, his name is spelled Töbe.

After his death, on 27 October 1852, Christian Heinrich Pautke married Anna Louise Christine Töwe, age 38, daughter of Martin Töwe from Charlottenhoff.

On 13 September 1841, Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Pautke was born on 13 September 1841 to father
Christian Pautne and mother Caroline Töwe in Charlottenhoff and baptized on 13
September. Witnesses included Martin Töwe, farm worker in Charlottenhoff.

In 1835 we have him at the wedding of his daughter "Christlieb Daniel Basler
married Dorothea Maria Toewe, age 25, daughter of Martin Toewe from Charlottenhoff on 10 July 1835."

On 29 May 1831 he is a witness to the baptism of Caroline Sophie Maahs where
he is listed as "Farm worker Martin Töwe of Charlottenhoff".

Henriette Charlotte, daughter of Martin Töve of Charlottenhoff died at age 2
years and 2 months on 1 October 1826.

This is just a partial of the e-mail...anyone have examples of this?

Thanks
Crystal

In the birth records for the first 5 children of Frederick Busch and Caroline Toebe all born in Preusseun, Caroline is listed as Toewe. Maybe they changed the spelling when they came over?

Hello Juli,

I had someone contact me in reference to my Toebe web page. He is doing research on the Toewe name. He has come across many records where depending on the record (marriage, birth, death etc.) the spelling is sometimes Toewe, Toebe, Tobe etc...all for the same people. I have in one of my marriage records the spelling for August Toebe as being Toewe. All forms of Toebe must be checked, especially when you know a town or area a person came from but are running into dead ends finding information. As many persons could not read or write I think it is possible the person doing the writing(scribing) just wrote down what they heard. The name Toebe and Toewe do sound alike, so I don't think it wasn't a name change.
