I have chased down, through 2 renamings, my wife's Todaro link. John Totora, my wife's grandfather, was born in New Orleans to Italian immigrant parents "Russel" Totora and Anna Totora (Rinchiuso). The problem is that John's parents NEVER talked about where they came from or any details of their past life in the Old World. After much searching I found a census where the last name had been listed as "Tortora" for Rosolino Tortora and his wife Anna. Thinking that was the link I tried running through Tortoras, thinking it was perfectly logical since there's an Italian town of the same name. But then I started talking to family members and getting rumors and tying them all together. Eventually I went down to the LDS Family History center in Salt Lake and started searching for records based on the rumors. The rumors were that the grandparents came from Alia, Sicily, that Rosolino had been previously married, and they came over in 1903.

After a brief search all the pieces fell together when I found the marriage record of Rosolino Todaro born 1862 and Anna Rinchiuso born 1882 in 1903 on Valentines day. Their parents were Giuseppe Todaro and Giuseppa Taulli and Antonino Leonardo Rinchiuso and Salvatora or Salvatrice Maria Talamo. And researching even farther back there may yet be another name change to Totaro. I'll follow up on that if I get proof.

So to follow the name changes, it goes from most recent to oldest, it is Totora to Tortora to Todaro To possibly Totaro.

If anyone has any more matching information I'd be glad to share the info.

Hi, looks as though I'm in the same boat as you as my research for a Joseph Todaro has proven quite difficult. I was able to trace his wife Pauline Mangogna and 3 daughters through an older daughter, who according to an obituary was a native of Dallas, Tex. The mother, a widow, and daughters appear in the 1920 New Orleans census, but have had no luck in tracing Joseph. Don't know what part Italy he's from either. If by any chance you've run across this family in your research, I'd appreciate you sharing this info with me. Thanks, Annette

Annette,

The Joseph Todaro you found in the NOLA 1920 census is the brother of my grandfather Salvatore "Sam" Todaro.

This Joseph was born in San Cipirello, Sicily in 1878, the son of Guiseppe Todaro and Guiseppa DiMaggio. He immigrated to the US (New Orleans) in 1902 with his brother Calegaro (Charlie) and Charlie's wife Grace "Rachel" Caruso.

Joseph married Florence Giammalie in New Orleans in 1913 and they had 5 surviving daughters:
Josephine, Giacomina (Jacilyn), Mary, Lena and Grace.

The 1920 census info lists Joseph (head), Florence (wife), Guiseppa DiMaggio (mother) and the children.

FYI: there are at least 2 distinctly separate Todaro families that settled in New Orleans and possibly more differentiated lines in Louisiana.

Hope this info is useful.

I have Rosolino Todaro born 12/6/1860 to Giuseppe Todaro and Giuseppa Taulli. I found no Rosolino born in 1862, but did find Antonina b. 8/12/1863 and Lucia b.11/30/1865
Giuseppe Todaro born abt 1829 in Cammarata, Bivona, Grigenti, Sicily to Giuseppe Todaro b abt 1801 and Antonina Lupo also from Cammarata.
Giuseppe Todaro born abt 1829, the oldest of 7, with him and #2 child born Cammarata. The rest born in Alia. The move seems to have been between 1830 and 1836
I have Anna Rinchiuso b. 1882 as 2nd of 9 children between 1879 and 1900. Her parents married in 1878.
Also I have found a Rosolino Todaro married to a Pietra Anna Bellina in 1891, but found no children from them.
My interest about stems from the fact my grandfather was born there in 1880. Two of his aunts married Todaro(s).
The vast majority of Todaro(s) I have found between 1800 and 1900 have the Todaro spelling. Only during the years of 1862-1865 have I seen the Totaro/a spelling. As in Hundreds versus a few.
An example of various spellings:
Barcellona, Barcelona, Barsalona, Marsalona, even Varsalona.

Your information is very helpful, and it is matching quite well with what I have. To clarify, for the two records you have for Rosolino Todaro, Pietra Bellina was his first marriage. He then married Anna Rinchiuso and moved to New Orleans that same year, 1903. Can you tell me the sources of, or send me your info? I'd definately appreciate any additional information. I may also be able to help if you would like any additional records searched, I have access to the LDS Family History Center here in Salt Lake City and would be glad to help with any microfilm searches.

Dennis, Thanks for the info on the Todaros, but the Joseph I'm looking for was married to Pauline Mangogna. They lived in Texas before coming to La.I think they had 3 or 4 daughters.I don't know what part of Sicily they were from. If you happen to run across any more info please let me know. Thanks again...Annette

Merrill, I happen to return to this site to check messages and found yours. Yes, it seems you have the correct info so far. Through which of Pauline's daughters did you find your information? Are you kin in any way to this family? I have recently received a lot of info through Italian Genealogy.com website. They were very helpful with finding Pauline, but her husband Joseph remains a mystery. Please stay in touch. Thanks, Annette

Merrill, Sorry about the mix up in my last post. I can't believe I was reading my own post. Disregard anything that doesn't apply. Thanks, Annette

I ran across your message and would like to know if you have made any more progress in your research on Joseph Todaro and Pauline Mangogna. It looks like my ancestor Victor (Victorio) Todaro married Josephine Antoinette/Annonetta/Antonina Mangogna. I wonder if our Todaros and our Mangognas may have been related. It looks like my family came from Italy about 1880, married in New Orleans in 1881, lived in New Orleans, moved to Texas briefly, then back to New Orleans, then to Shreveport, Louisiana. I'd love to compare notes - tnreid@charter.net

It appears that Pauline MANGOGNA and my Antonina MANGOGNA were probably sisters, and that Joseph (Giuseppe) TODARO and my Victor (Vittorio) TODARO were likely brothers. I have a little more info now and would love to hear from anyone working on these lines.
