YOUNGSTOWN – David Tod, 88, a descendent of one of the founding families of Youngstown , Ohio and the Mahoning Valley, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center.

David was born July 10, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of Marguerite & Fred Tod Sr.

He was a great-grandson of David Tod, who served as Ohio’s Civil War Governor during President Abraham Lincoln’s administration.
His grandfather, William Tod, was the manufacturer of large steam powered engines for use in the iron and steel industry.
David graduated from the Choate School in Connecticut and received his college degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949.
After college, he worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube before starting a 25 year career with the investment firm of Prescott, Ball & Turben in Youngstown.

With Daniel B. Roth, he co-founded, and served as President and Chairman of the venture capital company Torent, Inc. started in 1971.

Torent provided financial capital to develop local companies including the formation of McDonald Steel, which purchased its assets from U.S. Steel, and later was President and Chairman of McDonald Steel.
During World War II, David enlisted and served in the Army Air Forces from 1945 to 1946.

He was very active in community service, where he served as president of various organizations such as the Youngstown Club, Y.M.C.A., Youngstown Country Club, Tod Homestead Cemetery and the Buechner Hall Board.
David also served on the Youngstown State Educational Foundation

He was an avid golfer and was a past champion of Youngstown Country Club, and also enjoyed handball, skeet shooting, tennis and squash.
He leaves his children, David (Rollin) Tod II of Hudson, Ohio, Elizabeth (Howard) McMillan of Orono, Minn., and William Bruce Tod of Scottsdale, Arizona; his six grandchildren, Parker, Holly and Hilary Tod, Katherine and Maggie McMillan, and John David Tod; and his sister-in-law, Nancy B. Tod of Youngstown.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; his brother, Fred Tod; and sisters, Marguerite Owsley, Sallie Ketcham, and Katherine Johnstone.

David will be laid to rest in the family plot at Tod Homestead Cemetery Youngstown.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the care of Stewart-Kyle Funeral Home.
