I have found the following information and just wondered whether your Tod's ever were in the Army or lived on St. George Square at Goosedub. I am looking for information about the Captain Tod who lived on St. George Square as my ancestor worked for him in the late 1790's and early 1800's. I do not know if the information below relates to the Tod from St. George Square or not. However, I send it to you in case you are able to confirm or deny any of these connections:

Marriage:

John Tod, late in His Majestie's Army, and Margaret Weir, daughter of George Weir, cloth bleacher in Lanark, 28.7.1797 ["Parish of Holyroodhouse or Canongate, Register of Marriages, 1564-1800", Scottish Record Society, 1915; the wording/spelling in this publication usually differs slightly from the actual register]

Issue:

Helen, bapt. 19.1.1798; Janet, bapt. 24.1.1800; Alexander Renton, bapt. 3.2.1808, all in Lanark LKS [OPR index]

Testament:

Settlement and Inventory of John Tod, brewer in Lanark and distiller at
Wishaw, spouse of Margaret Weir. Recorded in Court Books of Glasgow
Sheriff Court on 16.12.1829.

Hi there,
I am trying to solve the puzzle of my 3xgt grandfather Robert Todd, who was born in Scotland about 1804. He was a printer and engraver. He married Elizabeth Gray (from Luton) and their 1st child Elizabeth was baptised in St Pancras, London 1831. Their 2nd child Euphemia was baptised at St Phillips Birmingham and after that they moved to Luton where several other children were born (including their first son John 1836 and my 2xgt grandfather William Gray Todd b. 1843 - he moved up to Leeds by 1881, which is where I was born).
I believe the most likely baptism for Robert is the one recorded at Leith South parish in 1804, Robert Tod son of John Tod, merchant in Leith and Euphemia Paterson, his wife (this assumption mainly based on Robert's childrens names (Euphemia & John) and a process of elimination of the other Robert Todds born in Scotland that year - so not 100% sure... but I'm working on getting better proof).
Euphemia Tod (widow of John) died in Edinburgh 1857 aged 82.
It's funny coincidence if these are the right Tod/Todd family - as I have lived in Edinburgh myself for the last 13 years - so the family would have come full-circle!
If anyone has come accross any info on John Tod merchant in Leith - or also any Tod/Todds in Scotland who were engravers I'd be grateful for any leads.
Also if anyone knows what happened to Robert Todd born in 1804 in Langholm, son of Robert & Lilly Blythe - I'd like to know - so I can eliminate him !
Thanks,
Jenny Cowling
