Tod surname

I have not researched the surname as such. It has been spelt with one "d" throughout my family since the 1700s. Perhaps the spelling has changed from one "D" to two in some parts of the world. The spelling of surnames was not really standardised until literacy was common. Whilst researching the IGI I have come across my family spelt as TOD, TOOD, TODE as well as TODD.

The name would appear to come from the northeast of England and the southern part of Scotland. According to my dictionary Tod means fox, bush, or a weight of wool.

Hi

I am researching Tod family history, being descended from Alexander Tod of Drygrange, Melrose, Capt HEICS b. 1733. His elder brother Thomas had descendants who moved to Liverpool in about 1800. I have no David Tod in this branch. (Source: old family tree). Let me know if you want more details.

Dear Alistair,
My Tod's have been traced back to James Tod born 1710.
He married in Moffat Dumfries Mary Aitchison in 1732.
You can see most of the details on my Complete Tree on Ancestry.
I have wondered for a long time if Archibald Tod who married Harriette Earle in Liverpool in approx 1850 is some way related.Reason being their connection to the slave trade.Interesting isn't it.
I am now trying to confirm the relationship between John Tod who died 1716 at Cariferon Dumfries with my lot.I'm almost positive but need absolute proof.
Keep in touch
Regards
Cath Tod

My Tod Family are from Moffat Dumfries .Look at my tree on ancestery:The Big One.
I think there must be some connection to Archibald Tod who married Harriette Earl as her family were also involved with the slave trade.
If you can find the common denominator I will be pleased as punch.

Cath Tod

Hi Cath

Sorry about the failure to reply to your earlier messages - computer trouble, and then my membership lapsed. I am only just getting back to this. Your Archibald Tod (d.1870) was my 2nd cousin 3x removed. According to my tree he was the son of Archibald (1758-1816) (seems a very big gap), g/son of Thomas (1726-1800), gg/son of Archibald (1699-1777). This last was my direct ancestor. Your lot are evidently the Liverpool Tods (Liverpool Victoria Insurance etc); mine are/were the India Tods, descended from Capt Alexander Tod (1733-1815) whose portrait by Raeburn we have. They were based at Haddington. Are you saying Archibald's family were slavers? Best wishes Alastair
