Hi,
I was wondering if anyone might be able to set me in the right direction in regards to tracing my family tree. My father is John Tod, born in Liverpool Eng. His father is Adam Tod from Glasgow, Scotland. John's mother is Phyllis Snodgrass from Hull, England. All three moved to Canada sometime in the 1950's to the Ottawa-Pembroke Area of Ontario. Both of my grandparents, Adam and Phyllis have passed on and I know nothing of my father's side of the family. If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely yours Brian Tod

Brian; I have no direct information for you, but the name Tod is the same as Todd. It was originally "tod de troix", pronounced tod du twa, and means "Fox of three" The coat of arms is three fox heads in the shield. The moto is "Opertet Vivere" and I still don't know what that means. I have attached a jpeg for you. Tom Todd, Brighton Colorado, USA

Thank you for your reply and the information. The Oportet Vivere is Latin for "One must Live"

Another arms I've come across (can't remember where) is:

Argent, a bend azure, three crosses crosslet filchee of the first, in base a pelican azure.

Interestingly, the motto was also 'Oportet Vivere'.

Hello,
I may be able to help. I have a pretty comprehensive family tree going back pre Archibald Tod, to Thomas Tod of Drygrange.
I have not as yet signed up to Ancestry.co.uk, so please do feel free to email me ( assuming my email address is shown).
Regards
Peter Tod
