BURLINGTON, Vt. — Mirza J. Tobias, 88, of Main Street, Burlington, and formerly of Plattsburgh, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Center.
Born in Plutarch, N.Y., on Oct. 1, 1914, he was the son of Mirza V. and Nellie (Roe) Tobias. He graduated from Saugerties High School in 1934.
Mr. Tobias was a milk plant supervisor at Jewett Dairy, New Paltz until 1940. He was then employed by the U.S. Navy Department at Quonset, R.I., as an expediter and purchaser of materials during World War II. From 1946-1950 he was a foreman for Ayers & Hagan Construction of Providence, R.I., building the Champlain Customs House. Later he worked for Pal Blade in Plattsburgh, was a foreman for Tilo Roofing in Plattsburgh, a state health inspector for restaurants and hotels in Vermont and a sales represent in aluminum siding and replacement windows for Roberts Aluminum in Burlington, from where he retired.
In 1938 he married Margaret "Marge" Handford who died previously.
"Toby," as he was known to his friends, had a great love of family, was a horse racing buff, enjoyed reading especially about the Civil War, and loved a good cigar and driving his Cadillac. He was deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, William Spencer and Debra Tobias of Killeen, Texas, Mirza J. Tobias III and Susan Tobias of Plattsburgh; two daughters and their husbands, Esther and Eddie Ebersole of Mesa, Ariz., and Elizabeth Anne and Craig Remsburg of St. Louis, Mo.; his dear friend and longtime companion who loved him dearly, Annette Richard of Burlington; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Two brothers, Clayton and George, died in childhood, and a daughter, Myrna, died in 1986.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Morrisonville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Assembly of God Building Fund, 164 Prospect Ave., Plattsburgh or a charity of choice.
