My grandfather William Toates was born 1886 in Essex, and all I have on his father is that he was from England, his name was John, whose wife was Ann (maiden name unknown). He (John) had at least one daughter who married a Gowler and their son is Percy Arthur Toates Gowler. I have a letter written to my grandmother from him in 1952 from Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.

My grandmother born 5th October, 1877 was a Toates from Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Her parents were John Toates and Ann Toates, formerly Rowell. My grandmother, Sarah Toates, had a sister , Florence Toates who married a Gowler and had a son called Percy. In fact, I well remember going to Westcliff-on-Sea , Essex to visit them. Percy I remember very well he was my father's cousin and worked for the railroads Ann Rowell was from Witcham, isle oe Ely and John was from Wilburton, Cambridgeshire. William, age six, as the 1891 census tell us, was born in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. Your grandfather must have been my grandmother's brother, Ther was also Hannah, Rachel and Arthur who died at the age of 28. I do have more information but since it is all stashed away in various files I will have to spend more time and go through it.
