All the Toates family members I have come across so far originated in Cambridgeshire (UK). Is that where yours come from too?

Hi Mike,
My mom did the history, she has that Joseph Toates Sr. Born in England 1775. Wilburton, Isle of Ely, Combs. The first record with Toates is 14th century.Yes there are names that were inCambridgeshire. They came over from there to US in 1884.

Hi Kim,

There seem to be two main branches of the Toates family in Cambridgeshire in the 19th century. One based in Wilburton (your lot) and the other in Histon & Impington (my lot). I originally suspected that, if I went back far enough, I'd find where and when they diverged. Now I'm not so sure as my lot seem to have changed their name from Tofts to Toates somewhere around 1800. I've no idea why but it's a fascinating area for future study.

I've kept a note of the Wilburton "clan" as and when I've come across members so I suspect I know the Joseph Toates you refer to. The parish registers record him dying in 1836 aged 64 so that would suggest a birth date around 1772 - however, his baptism isn't recorded there so I would have thought he was born elsewhere. I'll have to go back and check my notes.

Who was it that emigrated to the States in 1884?

Mick

Hi Mick,
Very interesting. My William Joseph Toates was who emigrated to the US in April or early May of 1884. They came over with three children, John Joseph (married a first cousin Kate Coley), my GGgrandparents, Arthur, and Alice Toates. We had a family member that lived in England till he died a few years ago that did alot of the family research. His name was Basil Coley. We have a very big Toates family from this line we get together every other year.

Thanks for the information, Nigel. I'll e-mail your father to see how our data matches up.

Hi Nigel,
My maiden name is Toates. What line is Colin from. Did you say you were raised in Cambridge? I believe you might come from a different line than my William.

I have details of an Alice Toates (born about 1877 in Grunty Fen, Cambridgeshire) who had sons John William Lee and Freeland Lee. Are these your ancestors? If so I can give you a bit more information about Alice's roots.
