Toals: Ireland to Liverpool to Philadelphia and Liverpool Again

Surnames: Toal
My grandfather was James Toal, born 1890 in Liverpool.

His father was James Toal, born c. 1857 in Ireland (may be Down, as per 1871 Census entry that could be him, aboard a vessel), to Bernard Toal (as stated on his marriage cert).

James Toal Snr was a master mariner who married in 1887 in Liverpool. His wife (Mary Ellen) and three children (my Grandfather, Bernard (1892) and Elsie (1893) emigrated to USA and joined him in 1894. Elsie died in Philadelphia in 1895 and twin boys were born and died there in 1896 (all buried in Holy Cross Cemetery). Another child may have been born and died in 1900, along with Mary Ellen. My Grandfather and Bernard, his surviving sibling, were sent back to Liverpool to be raised by their maternal grandparents.

On the 1900 Philadelphia Census I have found a Francis Toole, his wife Grace and children. Francis' dob is given as 1866, place of birth Ireland. Listed with them is James Toole, Francis' brother - he is a widower, the captain of a merchant vessel and about the right age and date of immigration to be my G-Grandfather. May or may not be him, it's pretty much the last trace I can find of him. There is a James Toal listed as the father of two children born in Philadelphia: Mary Jane (died soon after birth) and John (born 1902), mother Bella Devlin. John and Bella are on the 1910 Census, James is not - could be on board a ship, if it's him.

Francis Toole is listed on later Censuses as Frank Toal. He had children named Richard, Daniel, Bernard, Elizabeth, Rose, Grace and Rebecca.

Anyone connected to Frank Toal's family (or indeed my grandfather's brother Bernard, who I lose track of after WW1)?

Thanks

I am also researching Toals in the Philadelphia area. I don't see any connection yet to my people. But it is still early in my research.

I did want to let you know that I have noticed that there are multiple people with the names Frank Toal and Francis Toal and Bernard Toal and Mary Toal. Seems to be popular first names for Toals. Just want you to not assume that everyone you see with those names are your people.
Good luck and keep in touch.

Yes, there are a number of Bernards and Franks/Francis for sure (both in the UK and USA)! The surname gets written down in a number of ways too (Toal, Toole, Tool, Tole, Toll) and transcribed wrongly too (I've found Sool, Foal and Loal!), all of which makes it more difficult to track them down.

I am not at all sure that the "James Toole" I found on the 1900 Census is my GGrandfather, hence I am hoping to find someone who might be able to shed more light and either rule him in or out of this particular picture.

Good luck with your research!

Hey, I think we are related "somehow". I have taken all your information above and dissected it. I have found the wife of James Toal Sr. (Master Mariner) Mary Ellen listed with her three small children on an Ellis Island passenger record for October 5, 1894, the year you said they came here. I can send via email.
I NEED TO CONFIRM WHO JAMES & FRANCIS' PARENTS ARE AND THEIR INFORMATION. When the two brothers went back to Ireland did they go and live with Bernard Toal and Rose Quinn? There are so many Bernard Toals, I'm going crazy.
I am interested in all of your Toal family information because I am a Toal. My great grandfather is the Francis (Toole) Toal you mention on the 1900 PA census. He married Grace first and then he married a Catharine Eck. Francis and Catharine had: Bernard, Lewis, Francis, Jr. and Henry. Lewis is my relative. I would love to see your tree and find the information I do not have & haven't found yet. Help! My email is: mollytitus420@msn.com
