The name shows up as early as 1820 in Maryland. Don't believe Indians were enumerated in the federal census then. Hope this helps. Have seen multiple spellings, including TODVEN, TOADVIN, TODVIN, TOTEVINE in various states, including Kentucky. We are trying to locate a John Toadvine who was imprisoned by the Union in Illinois in the Civil War. There is a very interesting story about him passed down in Alabama, where a town was named in his honor.
