Was your ancestor Jewish? If yes, have you posted on www.jewishgen.org
TKACS is Hungarian, TKAC^ would be Slovak spelling, TKATCH/TKACH would be an Americanized version. To hear pronounciation go to http://say.expressivo.com
A detailed map:

http://igrek.amzp.pl/mapindex.php?cat=WIG100
Was your ancestor naturalized citizen or had SS-5Form?
http://ssdi.rootsweb.com Both documents should have his place of birth.
The name change happened after being in the new land several years. He would have come thru a port with his "old country" spelling of a surname.

In this spelling TKATCH not an easy way for most Slavic speaking people to pronounce the spelling. I would say what you have is an Americanized version of TKAC^ (Slovak) TKACS or TAKACS in Hungarian.
When did your ancestor come to America? Was his name on a document Janos, Mihaly, Hrycko or >>>>. Trying to help you with the research but I need more information from you to give you direction as in which "old country" your research will be.

Surnames: Tkacz
I described the whole story in my first letters, Francheska Tkacz came to the US somehow in 1910 and she married John Tkacz there so she became Tkacz too. They lived in Manville RI and they are burried there at the Ukrainian cemetery. She was from the village Krasne Galicia, wastern Ukraine near Tenopil. They had children Maria and Richard. Maria had two daughters Kynda and Dana. I don't know the Maria's surname taken after the marridge. Francheska came there with the sister Antonina. If I can contact the cemetary and get to know some information about the people who visit the graves I could know more. I also know the old address they lived at in RI but it is changed now. I am too far to go and search in the US.

It's been a few yrs since the last post in this thread. My greatgrandmother was a Tkacz( some relatives in Canada have anglicized it to Tkach/Tekatch/Tkatch)who was born in the village of Dovholuka, Stryi district, Lviv province, Ukraine.
When doing genealogy research I have found it important to know the village/town that our ancestors came from in order to make connections.
So if anyone has relatives who came from Dovholuka or from a nearby village, please contact me.

Sue, this is your Uncle Ray's daughter Dana Tkach. I've been searching for the same info, did not know Natalie was from Ukraine, my father always said she was from Austria. Her maiden name was Indek. She arrived in 1920 and Nicholas arrived in Canada in 1917, according to the very little my father told me. They are in the 1930 NJ census, your mom's name is there!

Hi Deborah, my grandfather was Mihaly Takacs. He emigrated from Slovakia in 1905. He stayed with his brother, George Takacs (Pietro) in Pottstown, PA. I don't have any info. about his parents. Can you tell me where your grandfather settled? My g-father was a farmer in Chester County, PA, and then a coal miner in Frackville, PA. He married once to Mary and had 4 children, then to my g-mother Veronica and had another 7 children. Let me know if this sounds like a connection. Thank you.
