Hello kach Board. I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Walter Tkach while he was Surgeon, Headquarters, Seventh Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Saigon Viet Nam, and a fine gentleman he was too. If you will plug in "Walter Tkach" on your search engine you will get about 60 hits with a great deal of information about Dr. Tkach, including his White House years as personal physician to first Vice Pres Nixon and later as Pres Nixon. Dr. Tkach was a Colonel in Viet Nam and later promoted to Major General (two stars). Doctor Tkach is recorded in history for eternity.

For Wendell Anderson-
Dr.Walter Tkach was my father John M.Hoffman's best friend from Monongahela PA. They grew up together in this little town. High School and Penn State.

My father went with the 8th Army Air Corps to Europe.
My dad was a Colonel in the Air Force for 22 years.
But we always stayed in touch with "Uncle" Walter,
even after the war. Walter was married to Helen Weller and he also attended my Mom and dads wedding in Washington.

We often visited him in his office at the White House when we lived in Washington, as he was my family doctor too.
My father was working at the Pentagon.

My mother Elizabeth Budris..., best friend was Faye Adams Steiner , who also worked in the White House through 5 presidents.Faye also attended my parents wedding August 31, 1945.

I still have a letter he posted from China in 1972 when he was with Nixon for this historical visit, and he observed Acupuncture for the first time.

I glad someonee was able to recognize what a great Man, physiscian and patriot he was.

Regards Lisa

Hi Jeff!
I'm also looking for Tkac. My spelling was changed to the above when my grandfather came over. His name was Michael Tkac born 23 Aug 1879 in Rozhanovce, Slovakia. (formerly Rozgony, Abauj-Torna county, Hungary) I know nothing else about him. If he has brothers, sisters etc. He Married Maria Forgacs also from that village.
He may have came over to U.S. about 1908.
Anything sound familiar with what you have?

Thanks,
Frank Takacs

Did he have a brother? My great grandfather is George Tkach and I have seen it spelled Trac and Tracs on records. He was a miner at Black Top Mine in Ohio, lived in Pa. and Illinois too. My grandmother Mary Tkach is still living at 95, his daughter. I am the great grandaughter. Deb

I think you might have given me a little info. My grandfather was Steve Onofrey. His father was George Onofrey. His mother Mary Vermicak. She died and George remarried to Mary Tutko. I think I had heard that George's mother's name was Anna, bu not sure. I wasn't getting anywhere.

I was looking at that website, but having a difficult time understanding what exactly to go into. I tried several options and couldn't get any info about family.

Do you know where your ONOFREY/ONOFREJ, VERMICAK/VERCIMAK and TUTKO were from?
If yes, than check into the LDS-Mormons (Family History Center) site for church records. You can order the films and view them in Family History Center Library.
The IABSI site gives direction nothing about your ancestral surname.
Check in www.helenezx.homestead.com to see if anyone posted with your ancetral surname and from your ancestral village. You can get in touch with the descendant thru Ms. Helene.

I do know that there is no such surname, VERMICAK in Slovakia, no one shows up coming thru Ellis Island.
Again it comes down to pronounciation, who was the person that was giving the information for the obituary. To me Vermicak and Vercimak is simple transposing of few letters.
I am only going by what I find in Slovak phone book and in wwww.ellisislandrecords.org You might want to look at the manifests. Family went to family in the beginning. You know the expression, birds of a feather fly together. They would not go to a stranger but to someone they knew from home or family.
