Hi Margie. How are you related to George. You have that he was your grandfather, but don't mention who of his children is your mother or father. George was my great-grandfather. His son, Steve was my grandfather who married Mary Tomasich (my grandmother).

Hi Margie,

I don't know if you'll see this after all this time, but I'll try anyway. My son, Jeff had been doing geneology with me a few years ago. I've recently started up again and discovered that Anna Tkach is not a grandparent. Possible a cousin, but I'm not sure. My grandfather was Steve Onofrey, b. 09/10/1912 in Streator, IL d. 02/15/2001 in Joliet, IL. His parents were George Onofrey b. 05/26/1880 in Austro-Hungary d. 03/23/1966 in Joliet, IL and Mary Vermicak b. 09/15/1884 in Austro-Hungary d. 04/25/1917 in Joliet, IL (She died and George got remarried to Mary Tutko)(her 1st husband was John Dutko). George's parents were George Onofrey (no other info) and Mary Rentka b. 08/15/1851 d. 09/26/1938. My great-grandparents got married on 02/11/1902 in Streator,IL. I have noticed that there is another George Onofrey out there whose father was Steve Onofrey. I think that's what had me confused. I have not been able to learn any more about either George in my family,so if you or anyone else has any info let me know. By the way, if one hasn't tried this; go to the cemeteries where relatives are buried. Usually the headstone will list birth and death dates as well as having other relatives buried nearby. You can then go to the local library and look up old obituaries on microfiche. Obituaries are also a good source of information. They often list; parents, siblings, children, etc. This is how I found the right George Onofrey. My grandparents are buried together and next to them, my great-grandparents are buried together along with his mother. Also watch out for different spellings. I have seen Onofrey as Ouofrey and Onofrej and Steven as Istvan, Stjphan and St'ephan. George as Georgy and Georgius. In the old country they didn't have middle names so to be more American, they often used their father's first name as their middle name when they came to the States. Also remember true Hungarians were Megyar and had animosity towards the Slovaks living there.
