My father's uncle, Ragnar Tjernström, has documented our ancestry back to 1580. All the ancestors were farmers living in three parishes in the Västerbotten county in northern Sweden (the name is a typical 'northern' name) , they all seemed to find a wife and a farm within walking distance. Unfortunately, only one of these ancestors emigrated to the US, and he returned within three years...
The spelling is old, a modern spelling should be Tjärn (a small lake) and ström, meaning 'river'. Many families nowadays spell with an ä, I insist on the e...
I was born in one of the three parishes....

Dear Sune,
My name is Erik Shonstrom and I currently live in Los Angeles, California. My great grand father was Jonas Arvid Tjernstrom, from Ornskolvik. His wife was Edith Shelton, and they immigrated to the USA in the early part of the twentieth century. I would love to know more about the Tjernstorm name, and I have flipped through this site (Ancestry.com) and have seen Ornskolvik mentioned a few times, so I am wondering if I am part of that line. I believe it was Jonas Arvid who Americanized Tjernstorm to Shonstrom, and I am hoping to establish a firm lineage so that I can change it back to its original form (the world is too full of boring names, and Tjernstrom is anything but boring). If you could, could you also provide me with a phonetic spelling of the name, so I can be sure I am pronouncing it correctly. I think I am, but my Swedish is non existant, so help would be much appreciated.
Please let me know if Jonas Arvid comes up in anything you have on the Tjernstrom line. Thank you very much.

It's been a long while since this board has been responded to so I'll give my family details as sketchy as they may be.
My great great grandfather was Olaf Tjernstrom who was born in March of 1848 in Sweden, most likely in the Essvik, Vasternorrland, area. My great great grandmother was Erika Blum (Born September 1845), unknown origin but likely Germany. She was on a ship that shipwrecked off the coast of Sweden. Olaf was one of the rescue party and eventually married Erika Blum. Marriage date unknown. They had many children born from 1873 to 1886. Their names were Kristina (1873), Anna (1875), Frank (1878), Ella (1879), Leontina (My grandmother 1880), Oskur and Wittoria (twins 1884), Adel, and Albertina.
Places of residences may have included Gundsunda, Vasternorrland, as well as Essvik. There was mention of a town, Gersonvik Fjord, but I have yet to locate it in Sweden.
Several of the children migrated to the US in 1902 including Adel, Leontina, Alberina, and Victoria and eventually settled in Becker County, Detroit Lakes, Mn area.
Any help on the Swedish side of this family would be appreaciated.

My great grandfather was a Tjernstrom, he imigrated to Canada in about 1918 but so far I have only been able to trace back to his parents. I am interested in following the line farther back. he was born in skellftea sweden so it sounds like he was a decsendent of one of the 3 brothers you mentioned. my great grandfathers name was ludvig tjernstrom born in 1899. If you have any information that may help me out it would be greatly appreciated as I am running into a roadblock in my research
