Welcome to the Tjernstrom forum
Hello to anyone who peruses this message board.I decided to set up this board because have seen people post for the name on other boards.I have left messegs on the Danish, Christiansen(son),Hansen,Hjorth(Hiorth),Strom & probably a few other message boards I have forgotten about. It all started because of my gma.She never spoke about her family at all. She seemed to really despise and hate her family,so even her own children & husband never knew much about who she was related to.All I had were the names above and not much else.It was said that Elsie had many brothers and sisters, but other people in the family disputed that, and said it was my gma who had many brothers and sisters. How can you start searching if no one knows anything at all.Well luck must have been on my side as I have been able to find out a few things on the message boards, any way I am waffling on. I will just get to it.My gma was Lillie Ann(Lily Anne)Christiansen b. Dec 05.1924 in Lakeside,Ca to Hans Mathias Christiansen(b.1868?Denmark)&Elsie Hansen(b.23.09.1887 Arno Parish Sweden). She m. William Raymond Erickson of Denver,Colo.I started my research on the Ericksons. That was easy. Then there was/is the mystery of Elsie Christiansen. She was my gmas mum.All we knew is that she was m.3x's.Christiansen was her second.Hansen was her first. It has been said that she left him as he was abusive towards her.No first names. We were not sure if Elsie first two children were actually Hansen's or Christiansens.Elsie was supposed to have arrived when she was a teenager.Where and when,& with whom is still very much a mystery. Two kind people replyed to my mssg in the Swedish forum a few weeks ago with the details of Elsie family.
1880 census the Strand,Alno parish Per Tjernstrom b. 03.19.1858 in Arnas Elisabet Kristina Tafvander b. 25.04.1862 in Borgsjo Married June 12th 1881 D>Maria Elida b. 10.04.1881 Arnas S>Per Eugene b.02.07.1883 " S>Ragnar Emanuel b. 25.10.1885 " D>Elsa Kristina b.09.23.1887 " D>Nanny Emerentia b.16.07.1889 " D>Ragnild Elisabet b.23.03.1891-d.18.01.1892 " S> John Gustaf b.22.11.1892 " The records end in 1895. From Emigration base Alno is found from Strand to Alno for Finland 1902 Per Eugene Alno for Finland also Gustafberg in Alno Maria Elida Wennberg(Tjernstrom)and her children Ragnar Gosta Wennberg b.18.05.1899 Alno Ragna Elisabet Wennberg 19.07.1900 (Elida was an Aunt my mum finally remebred staying w/ in San Diego, her husband was Ernst Rudolph Wennberg b.?d.?)
On October the 18th left the Strand for America was Elsa(Elsie)&Nanny possibly from a Norweigan port. Thanks to Johan, & Bo Bjorkland for thier generous info.
So somewhere in Salt Lake city we have Elsie marry a Hansen.(I have since found that Elsie m.H.M.Christiansen. in 1913.)She has Harry William Hansen(d. a Christiansen June 1989 ) b.26.01.1909. Evelyn I believe was b.03.03.1917 in Arizona,(indeed if this is the right Evelyn). Then the 1st Lily is born she lived to be between 10-12 y.o.How she died and from what is anyone's guess. Then Lily Anne #2 was born.Hans Mathias owned a farm in Lakeside,Ca.He supposedly died in the 1930's.Elsie then m.a Hjorth(Hiorth). He died in the 1950's.On a diffrent track I was looking for a Ragnar Tjernstrom.I did an Ellis Island look up and found a Ragnar had come from Finland w/ his mother Christina and a Ragnilda(who i thought was her daughter.)They were going to her dohtters house in Brighton St Los Angeles.Ca.The name was Maria Wennberg. I found on the mssg boards a Shari Gordon-Chisum was looking for a Ragnar who died in Finland, her uncle was Gustav(John Gustaf?) Strom.I know that uncle Ragnar went back to Finland.According to the SSDI & Shari he died in 1969 same bday as info above. My family was actually stunned to know he lived so long. They thought he was dead.Did he have children or a family? As for any of the other Tjernstrom children I Know not where of.Two of Elsie's sisters were supposed to have gone to Hawaii.I found the Wennberg family in the California Death Records under Wannberg. Both children and her husband,& possibly even another son.Ragnild is not listed.Did they have family's?Did Ragnild go to Finland or get m.?. The Tjernstrom name seems to be misspelled more often than not.Torengstrum,Tjarnstrom,Fjernstrom(on my my gma's birth cert)Tjernsteron,Kjernstine.Wennberg,Wannberg,Werrnberg,Hjorth,Hiorth. The only other thing that I know about the Tjernstroms is that many of the women were housekeeper/servents.I was told how Elsie had worked for a very wealty woman in Calif, who sold her house to Lucielle Ball & Desi Arnez Jr.From what I have been told was that she stayed on with them. There is a possibility that she cooked for the Roosevelts as well. She d.Elsie Hiorth in Santa Clara,Ca07.03.1965. This is what I have.If you have any keys please help!Goodluck to anyone looking for the branches of the Tjernsrtoms (Illinois,Wisconsin etc..) Thank You Michelle

Re: Welcome to the Tjernstrom forum
Hello there.
As (possibly) the newest Tjernström to emigrate to the US (1999), it always amazes me how wide our family tree is these days.
I'm a direct paternal line descendant of the storekeeper Eric Tjernström of Arnäs. My grandfather (Knut) once characterized the family as "Either Thieves (storekeepers) or Priests (quite a few of those in the mix)". He himself was a dentist.
We have managed to follow the pternal line back through the name change from Andersson to Tjernström when the family moved into the house in Tjern (as well as being a geographically based name, as so many Scandinavian are, it's also a specific place in this instance) just outside of Arnäs (itself an idyllic suburb of Örnsköldsvik (OER for those travelling and needing airport info).
My borther Johan and sister Eva are the true founts of Genealogical knowledge amongst the three of us, I'll forward this webpage to them (of interest is that apparently the last Johan in the family tree disovered to-date was a poteen-distiller of some noteriety).
Happy Families! Rgds Staffan Tjernström Des Moines, IA, USA

Re: Welcome to the Tjernstrom forum
Staffan I am happy to know that there are other people out there who still carry this name.It may sound silly, but I suppose I know diffrent since starting doing my research there is a ton of Tjernstroms.I am glad that you will forward the info along as I am real curious to see how far I can trace my ancestors back.Thank You for posting your message.I thought I would have to wait a year before someone discovered the forum. Re: Welcome to the Tjernstrom forum
Dear Staffan,
I posted a message on the board (accidentally I posted the same message three times) and I also thought I should contact you. My great grandfather was Jonas Arvid Tjernstrom on my father's side. Am I looking in the right place? Jonas Arvid was from Ornskolvik. I'm trying to establish a family tree. Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Re: Welcome to the Tjernstrom forum
After reading this thread I thought I might share my portion of the Tjernstrom tree.
My maternal great grandmother was Leontina Tjerstrom Johnson who was born in 1880 in Sweden most likely in Arnas, Vasternorrlands. According to the 1890 Swedish census the family lived in Arnas in a community called Alne, Ansag. Her father was Olof Tjernstrom born 1848 in Anundsjo, Westernorrlands. Her mother was Erika Karolina Ersdotter born 1845 in Grunsunda, Vasternorrlands. She had eight brothers and sisters:
Sara Kristina b 1873 Anna Karolina b 1875 Frans Orlof b 1878 Edla Maria b 1879 Oskar b 1884 Viktoria b 1884 (Oskar and Viktoria were twins) Adolf b 1887 Albertina b 1890
My great grandmother emigrated from Sweden to the US along with Oskar, Viktoria, Adolf, and Albertina in or about 1902. I believe all settled in Minnesota in Becker County (the Detroit Lakes area). Leontina married my great grandfather, August William Johnson 1874-1952, both residing, until their deaths,in Detroit Lakes, Becker County, Minnesota.
Their mother's(Erika Karolina Ersdotter)family tree was a shroud of mystery. She apparently was on a ship that ran aground off the coast and my great grandfather was part of the rescue party. They eventually married. The rumor was that she came from Middle East and her last name was actually Blum or Bloom. The name she had taken in Sweden may have been the family that took her in after the shipwreck. Apparently the family here in the United States was sworn to secrecy as to this day we do not know who Erika Ersdotter really was, where she came from, and who her parents were.
If anyone can help with Olof Tjernstrom family tree I'd appreciate any information. The name Tjernstrom appears to be common to the area but not having access nor translating Swedish, it's been kind of tough moving backward from 1890.
Thanks in advance
