I grew up believing that the name "Tjaden" was a Dutch name. Since then I have discovered that my ancestors moved from Germany to The Netherlands before coming to America, leading me to believe that the name is German. Now I am finding other "Tjaden's" online who say the name is of Norwegian heritage. Does anyone know where the name originated?

I know what you are talking about. There are atleast 7 different Tjaden families in The Netherlands and several in northern Germany. I have visited some of these families in both of those countries. My particular branch came from the Aurich, Ostfriesland area. When I was attending a Norweigen college (Luther) at Decorah, Iowa, I had an instructor that was sure the name had Scandanavian roots. My e-mail address is: btjaden@neotek.net

My mother's middle name is Tjaeder and there are relatives in Denmark with that name. We believe that it is of Scandinavian origins since there are some in Sweden also but it could also have easten roots likely Polish. Regards, birgit

William,
I have a Trientje Tjaden in my family and she married Lubbert Jakob van Düllen. They are from Ostfrieland. If you recognized these names I would appreciate hearing from you.
Best Regards,
June

I am looking for George Tjaden who emmigrated from Germany to NY. He was in NY by Apr 1923. His sister Sophie was b. 21 Jan 1872 in Norden, Ostfriesland, Germany, and so was her father. I have the names of Sophie's and George's parents and grandparents, but would like to locate more information. Sophie d. in Stade in 1954. If these names mean anything to you please contact me.

Hi,
my name is still Tjaden it's very common name in Ostfriesland. There are plenty off people around the area of Aurich!
Regards, Sigrid

I think it's of vikingsorigin, because of the traces back to sweden, norway and finnland. But thats just an idea, i have no proof on it.
