I'm seeking information on Delitha Tiwater, who was born March 3, 1797 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvannia. She married George Rhodes on December 12, 1815. They both died on October 23, 1863 in Missouri. I have been unable to find any information on Delitha or the Tiwater surname. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

Virginia, I don't know about our Great Grandmother or where she may be buried. However our Grandmother Florence (married to James Wesley Tiwater) is buried in Tulsa, OK.In 1993 we went to the Davis-Dawson family reunion and on the Tulsa where Mother (Edith Tiwater Turner Aust) purchased a tombstone and had it placed. She was buried in what then was "potter's field" perhaps her death certificate may give some hint of other family connections. Also, I do have the marriage license for JW and Florence. Her full name was Susan Elvira Elizabeth Florence and the death certificate, I believe, is S.E.E. Florence Tiwater.
Your cousin, Betty Jean

Hi Virginia,

Sorry, I'm still at a dead-end. I can't even find where the surname Tiwater originates. Now I know why professional genealogists charge so much money.

Virginia and Cynthia,
I am Virginia's cousin in So. California. Our Grandfather told me and/or us that his family was really Tidewater from Virginia. However, we know that he was not born there. This morning, I spoke with my Mother, the last of this family by JW and Florence Tiwater, she told me that it is possible that Lillie Skaggs was never married to Grandpa's father. At that period of time, she said, if a white woman became pregnant by an Indian it was not unusual for them to give the child away. And she does know that he was part Indian as was our Grandmother. So it could be Tidewater ????

Hi Betty,
You may be right. My great-great grandfather, George Rhodes, born March 21, 1792, in one of the Carolinas married Delitha Tiwater, born March 3, 1797, in Philadelphia. They were married on December 12, 1815. They both died on the same day October 23, 1863, in Missouri. They had twelve children. George is supposedly the first Rhodes born in the United States. His family supposedly immigrated to the U.S. from Germany and supposedly were originally from England. I haven't been able to verify any of this. It's just based on what family members remember. When I first started my research my mother told me that she thought that Delitha was a native american indian or that one of her parents was and that Tiwater was not the orignial name, so it is possible. I'll try searching under Tidewater. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. I'm not holding out much hope though. My great-great grandmother on my mother's side was native american indian and she was never legally married to my great-great grandfather. He supposedly traded a saddle for her. I haven't been able to located anything on her. Thanks, Cynthia

Hi Cynthia,
I dug through my boxes and found the marriage certificate for my Grandfather and Grandmother. On it James Wesley Tiwater married Florence Dawson Sept. 21, 1909. It also shows that they lived in Keokuk Falls, OK in the County of Okfuskee. He was 22 years old, she was 17; shows that they were both born in Oklahoma. I know that Grandma was born there, for certain. They were married by John R. Wilson a Baptist minister in Keokuk Falls. It was witnessed by W.A. Dawson and Jim O'Brien. It was recorded in F.B.1 P39. W.A. Dawson was Grandma's father, Jim O'Brien may have been a friend of Grandpa's. This does give me some hope of finding a little more information, perhaps if I can get a copy of the application for license. ???

Hi Betty, do you know what band (kind )of Indian your Grandparent's are? Have you ever viewed the Tarwater or Tawwater message boards? Where are Jw and Florence Tiwater from and how does Lillie Skaggs come into the picture? We are most definately related, I just wish I could find the one name of the right person to make the connection. Would love to compare info, please e-mail me with any info you are willing to share. My father's name was Raymond Ray Tawwater, his family lived in Tn. Tx.Ga. La. Va. and Carolina.

Do you access to their death certificates? There can sometimes be very useful information. Good Luck. Kay
