Snoden Tivis is my great great great great grandfather. I have traced my family history back that far, but would like to go back further. If anyone has more info I would love to hear from you. I have heard that we came to America as early as the 14th or 15th century, but can't find info on that. Mary Bell contacted me years ago when she was doing research for her book "The Tevis Family" but have lost contact with her. I am looking for her current address and info on her book, if its still available.
Thank you
Cindy

Mary moved from Clare, IL, to DeKalb, IL. Address: Mary M. Bell, 664 Roberts Circle, Dekalb, IL, 60115.

Is this your Snoden?

Snoden TIVIS (1801, Madison Co., KY - 1853) was son of
Nancy BURGIN (ca. 1772 - 1841, dau/o Mary & Isaac BURGIN), &
Nathaniel TEVIS (1770/5, Baltimore Co., MD - will pr. 10 Oct. 1818, Richmond, Madison, KY).
Nathaniel & Nancy m. 8 Aug. 1797, Madison Co., KY.
She had three children from a prior marriage, 4 Je. 1792, to Benjamin HARRIS.

Nathaniel TEVIS (ca. 1740, MD [45 in 1785] - Sep. 1798, will pr. 2 Oct. 1798, Madison Co., KY) m1. 1763, Baltimore Co., MD, Ann BENNETT (9 Feb. 1738, Anne Arundel Co., MD - 18 Mar. 1786).
Handmade tombstone, in the Bennett Cemetery, formerly Baltimore Co., now Carroll Co., MD, says
When this you read think of the dead hear lies the body of Ann Tevis born in the year Febry 9 1738 died March 18 1786.
Nathaniel TEVIS m2. 28 Oct. 1787, Baptist Ch., Baltimore, MD, Keziah SIMPSON.

Robert TEVIS (ca. 1709, MD - will pr. 25 Oct. 1796) was son of Robert TEVIS & Susannah DAVIES, m. 15 Apr. 1707, All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD. Robert (Jr.) was 76 in 1785, per land record WG:X:137, Baltimore Co. His wife Margaret died by 1783, Balto. Deed WG:0:207.

Robert's eldest son was apparently Peter, b. 173_, who was of age by Oct. 1762, per land record.
Daughter Anne, b. ca. 1737? m1. 27 Mar. 1757, St. Thomas, Balto.Co., Francis WELLS, who d. 1769; m2. Thomas LANE (26 Je. 1737 - 1787).
There was a daughter Susanna, named in her father's will. Some think she m. Joseph WELLS, but that Susanna was deceased before Robert TEVIS made his will.

Wm. A. PORTER's book, Descendants of Peter Porter, Emigrant of 1621, says that children of Robert TEVIS included Delilah, who m. ca. 1766, Adam PORTER (ca. 1742 - 1823+). Delilah had five brothers and sixteen sisters. Twelve sisters and their husbands had a Christmas dinner together at the home on the Patapsco near Baltimore. Husbands included ARMSTRONG & HAMMOND, besides those that have been identified. Robert TEVIS sold land, 25 Sep. 1740, to Nathan HAMMOND. This has led some to believe that Robert married Margaret HAMMOND [not proven].

The willl of Robert TEVIS, 1796, Maryland, was witnessed by F. SNOWDEN. Snoden (1801 - 27 Dec. 1853, Moniteau Co., MO) had a grandson named Snowden. However, the tombstone and his father's will spelled his first name Snoden.

You're welcome. Please post if you find that Mary has more copies of the book. She was considering a second printing. The book is well documented, but my message would have been pretty long (and harder to read) if I copied them.

I will, and thanks again. Just curious, how far back have you gone with the Tivis name?

How far back?

That depends.

We know that Robert TEVIS m. 15 Apr. 1707, All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel Co., MD, Susanna DAVIES.
--Robert BARNES' Maryland Marriages, & F. Edwd. WRIGHT's Anne Arundel Church Records.

There was a Robert TIVIS who m. 13 Oct. 1682, Halstead, Essex, Honor SMITH.

So far, there is no proof that the one who married in 1682 was father of the one who m. 1707, but it's possible.
