Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
My father was Frank Francis Titchener B1911, he had one stepbrother Frederick, and three other brothers Arthur Alex B1905, Alfred George B 1909, George Stephen B1912. Their father was Alfred Percy Thicthener B1869, he had a brother Francis B1867, sister Amy B1874 and brother George B1875. Their father was Robert Thicthener B1846, married Amy Apthorpe. Roberts father was William Thicthener B1808, M1840 Robert had a brother Henry B1841, brother William B1845. Great, Great, Grandfather William's father was also called William and was married to Emma. They had 4 sons, Samuel, Henry Horatio, Philip Elliott and William Josephat. Primarily the families all lived around Clerkenwell, Newington, St Pancras, Islington and Kennington. Any information in connection with this family will be very interesting, especially if anyone can shed light on a birth date/place for GGG William around 1780's.

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
I have a Mary Ann Thicthener who married George Sydney King and went to Argentina then Chile in c 1864. On their marriage cert it states father of the bride William Thicthener, Watchmaker. I have found his name in the Clock and Watchmakers Museum in London, he was born c 1808-1813 St.Lukes, London. I believe she had a brother Henry also a watchmaker and a brother William who also was in the same business. Are these any connection to you?

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
I have a few Thictheners in my tree, and find the name fascinating, especially as it's quite rare. I had the notion to collect up all the ones I could find in all the censuses and BMD records, and try and join them all up into family groups. A bit of a one name study, but not an official one, just for my pure amusement.
I am fully aware that the name's spelling changes from generation to generation and to different branches of the tree.
If you have a combined family unit, let me know and I'll see if I can link it up for you. I'm building it on Ancestry, so you should be able to view it (but not living relatives)
Mobogg, I know you post is old now, but if you still read this, can you confirm the correct spelling of Frank Francis Titchener, as you have put his father as Alfred as Thicthener. I just want to ensure I record it correctly.
Out of interest, my Thicthener was Mary Ann Thicthener b.....

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
I am the great granson of robert thicthener, b Llondon 1846, on the paternal line. i too have drawn a blank regarding the connection of titchener to thicthener beyond the early 1800s it seems likely that the clockmakers of clerkenweel descended from the titchener's listed in the 1750s clock makers lists. I look foward to hear from you. philip thicthener also known as philip thitchener just to add to the confusion!

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
Hi Jacqui Thank you so much for the message below and I am so sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I now live in France and have just resumed my investigations. The info you gave seems like they are connected although you did not mention her having a brother called Robert b:1846 who would be my Great Grandfather. We are very stuck with tracing William seniors birthplace, and we believe his father was also called William and he had 3 brothers Samuel, Henry & Philip. If you have any more information, I would very much love to hear from you again. Thank you so much

Hi Jennie Thank you so much for responding to my enquiry, and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I now live in France and have only just resumed my investigations. If Mary Anne had a broher Robert b:1846 then I would be very interested to hear from you again. My fathers birth certificate contained both spellings, his being Frank Francis TITCHENER. I hope to hear from you again with any information you might have, and thanks once again.

Hi Philip So sorry not to have replied sooner, I have moved to France since posting the message and have only just gone back to my investigations. I'm excited to think we may be distant cousins and would be excited to hear any information you might like to let me know on your strand of the family. Interestingly, my brother Simon named his son Philip also. I hope to hear from you again and thank you once again for responding. Gwen (MoBogg on message board)

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
I left a message on this board last Dec 07, but seem to have disappered halfway through my message and didn't give all the details I have.
I have a Mary Ann Thicthener who married Joel Henry Jupp. they were my x3 great grandparents. They lived in Mile End, Stepney area. Mary Ann Thicthener's parents were William and Elizabeth Thicthener. They married in ? and he was recorded as a jeweller. Mary Ann lived until she was 80 dying in 1899. She is recorded as being born in St Luke's (Clerkenwell) as was her mother Elizabeth. So far I haven't located Mary Ann's baptismal record. (or her mother's or her father's) But I think are probably connected to your Thictheners? Your William Thicthener born 1808 could possibly be my Mary Ann's brother. The dates fit well, as does the area.
Mary Ann's father William, the jeweller, was dead before Mary Ann was married in

Re: Titchener/Thitchener/Thicthener
I can't see how to edit my previous post. So a few more accurate facts.
Mary Ann was born in St Luke's in 1819 (not 1809) so she may be a little young to be your William's sister)
Mary Ann married in 1842 to Joel Henry Jupp at St John's Hoxton, and her father William Thicthener a jeweller appeared to be present. His wife Elizabeth described herself as a widow in 1861 Census. William Thicthener would have been born about 1770. I have yet to locate a marriage of William and Elizabeth, but I would imagine it will be in the St Luke's parish marriage records. I don't think they are on line anywhere yet, but I reckon that parish is the best place to start looking for Thicthener baptisms and marriages.
