Katherine Tischhauser
Katherine Gantenbein, daughter of Andrew and Katherine Gantenbein, was born in Grabs, Cantor, St. Gall, Switzerland. June 17, 1854. At the time of her death she was 77 years, 9 months, and 17 days old. She passed away Wednesday morning, April 6 at the home of her friend, Mrs. Schlegel, Her death was caused by a bowel obstruction and other complications.
She came to Dickinson county directly from her home in Switzerland and settled first near Herington and later moved into the New Basel community. She came to America in the year 1902. She had lived for 22 years in her home three miles northwest of the New Basel church.
In March, 1910, she was married to John Tischhauser. Their married life was but brief death who spares no one, and took Mr. Tischhauser in July of the year 1913. There are surviving her death three stepchildren, two nephews living in Topeka; one niece living in Portland, Ore., and one niece living on the home place at Elmo.
The deceased was a member of New Basel church and also of the New Basel Ladies’ Aid Society.
Mrs. Katherine Tischhauser was a great lover of the outdoor life and especially fancied beautiful flowers. She was quiet and unassuming. She was ever ready to lend a helpful hand wherever it was needed. God alone knows all of her acts of kindness and ministrations.
About two years ago, in company with her niece, Mrs. Ralph Calkins, of Portland, Ore., Mrs Tischhauser made a trip back to her old home among the Alps in Switzerland, when without a doubt her love for the beautiful in God’s nature was somewhat satisfied.
She leaves besides the other relatives mentioned earlier, others who mourn her passing. May her love for the beautiful be fully satisfied in the Abiding City.
