Wild Speculations: Griffith Tinney (Jackson Co, AL) & Ambrose Tinney (St. Charles Co, MO) ???

Like many others I have been hunting for the parents and origin of Griffith Tinney, who appears to have been born c. 1784 in North Carolina (which could have been Tennessee) and who raised a family on some former Cherokee land he picked up at a steal in Jackson County, Alabama. Griffith is my 3rd g-grandfather through John Calhoun then Charles Lewis then William Ambrose then William Ancel/Ancil (my father). I am not alone, it seems, in getting nowhere.

Recently I found the family history of one Ambrose Tinney, born c. 1810 not sure where and resident in 1828 in St. Charles County, Missouri. Ambrose married in St Charles County and later moved to Caldwell County, Texas and became one of the earliest Anglo settlers in what would be the birthplace of the Texas war of independence. Along the way, Ambrose had children, among whom were two sons names John Lewis and Griffin.

I note that I have seen Griffith rendered as Griffin more than once. It's this occurrence of the names Griffin(th), Ambrose, *Lewis, in the two Tinney lines that attracts my attention.

Here is some of my wild speculation: If Ambrose was born in 1810, Griffith would have been about 26 years old. I show Griffith marrying Martha King (my ancestor) in 1814. Could there have been a previous marriage? Or could Ambrose be an illegitimate son of Griffith? Or, striking out along a different path, could Ambrose be a nephew to Griffith, son of an unidentified brother?

Anyone with information about the siblings of either Ambrose or Griffith, or the birth records, birth place, and/or parents of either, please contact me!

I am sorry to say that I do not have any information of Hugh Tinney's parents, birth location, or siblings. I do have a history on him since his relocation to the United States. I also have done some DNA testing to try and find some relationships. His is a 2nd Great Grandfather. I have also completed FTDNA Family Finder which resulted with a few names but do not know if it is the Tinney line. I do strongly believe that he came to this country with other family but just do not know who they are.

Clint Daniel

I am sorry that I do not have information on the Tinney family to 1765. Hugh Tinney was born about 1833 in Ireland and that is as far as I go back. I have completed Family Finder DNA study in FTDNA and have made some Irish connections but nothing positive. If I can help let me know or if you find anything please let me know.

Clint Daniel

Hello Mary,
I found the following posted in a thread on another board, but it listed your old AOL address.

I'm searching for William TINNEY, his sons Isaac who had a dau Catherine and son Joseph Thomas Tinney, Richard who married Mrs. Ruth King, and Thomas. Isaac moved to Washington Cty, Ga. and his son Joseph Thomas Tinney was born there. Then Isaac moved to Meriwether Cty, Ga. My g-grandfather, Joseph Thomas Tinney, moved on to Shelby City, Ala. Thank you. Mary Elizabeth Tinney Hill, email Mbuffyroy@aol.com

I am also related to William through his son Richard and grandson Isaac. Were you ever able to establish the line going any further back? Some of the references by others I am finding on Ancestry are incorrect as people have just clicked away and now have parents being born after children. And of course the great “Masilva” mystery is an issue as well.

Any information you have that would assist me would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Thomas Tinney
