Tilyou / Tillou

My grandfather was Willard Tilyou. I am looking for information on his great grandfather, Charles Tilyou, born in 1817. One lead I have was that he was the son of Joseph Tilyou, but he was born in a different town from which Joseph was from. Records in the town of Ripley were not kept until two years after his birth and I was told that a fire destroyed his death records.

I appreciate anyone's assistance.

Thank you
Paula

Catherine Tillou

I recently came across a dated email correspondence string on the Tillou line. I have been searching for many years to trace a Catherine Tillou. She is said to have been born approximately 1825 in either Herkimer or Dutchess County NY.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for further information on Catherine??? Her middle name was Elphine which was quite unique I thought. She married and spent her adult life in Rochester NY.

Thoughts are appreciated

Mike Palozzi

I am researching the name Colnett, French Huguenots, leaving France to England in the 1600's. I have some information on Isaack Colnett from Parish Records of St. Deunstan & St. Mary, Whitechapel, Stepney, London for the year 1640. Have been told that they originated from France, but do not know which part. Any information would be certainly appreciated.

I am the granddaughter of Flora Alta Tilyou. We are descendents of the Pierre Tillou family. (The name was
changed by one of our ancestors from tillou to Tilyou.) My great-great-great grandfather was Peter Tillou/Tilyou. I believe he was born Aug. 1, 1771 in Dutchess County New York. He married Anna Canton from Albany, and they eventually moved to Michigan (around Jackson County). They had several children, including my great-great grandfather Carlisle. I am interested mainly in the origins of Peter. I can't seem to find anything on him...there are so many Peter Tillou/Tillyou/ Tilyous. I am guessing that he was the son of (Pierre) Joseph Tillou and Mary Carlisle, since the name Carlisle is very pervasive in my line. My uncle's name is also Carlysle, and my sister's name is Carla. I've also discovered two other Flora Tilyous and an Alta Tillou. If you have any info. regarding the pioneering Tillou's I would appreciate the enlightenment. I know that there was a father Pierre, and two sons Vincent (married to Elizabeth Vigneau), and Pierre/Peter ( married to Esther Pelletreau...which I believe is my line). Did Vincent and Peter have any other siblings? A brother William, perhaps?

Hi, I have a Carlisle Tillou married to my 5th g-gpa's sister, surname Briggs. Carlisle died 2/1/1847 at 69 years in the Town of Clinton, per the Poughkeepsie, NY newspapers. There were a few other Tillou's, which I've listed below. We only recently found this information with a copy of Benjamin Briggs' will from the early 1800's and have nothing else to go on so far.

Other Tillou's

Catherine Johnson (wife of Jee(__) C.) - d. 2/1/1867 at 30y 1m in Poughkeepsie
Ellen R. Vail Tillou (wife of Ebenezer) - d 7/16/1866 at 33y 6m in Poughkeepsie
Peter R. Tillou d 11/26/1843 at 22 years (in this village - assumably Poughkeepsie)

Carlisle and Elizabeth (? - I'm doing this from memory, I think I have her correct first name) owned land next to her father Benjamin Briggs in Clinton Hollow, a hamlet in the Town of Clinton, NY - this info is from a map published in The Town of Clinton by Bill McDermott. Poughkeepsie and Clinton are in Dutchess County.

I will continue to look for information, but it is quite scarce at this point.

KarenL

You are the only person on this list so I thought I would send this to you. I was looking through this book for my own ancestors and found a Pierre Tillow.
Source: The Huguenots or Early French in New Jersey by Albert F. Koehler, 1992, Clearfield Press. "Pierre Tillou, the ancestor of the Tillou family of Essex County, fled from St. Nazaire, France in 1681, was naturalized in England on March 21, 1682, coming to New York before 1691. A petition dated 1691 asks that Peter Tillou (a French Protestant) with others be made burghers and citizens. A son Vincent Tillou married Elizabeth Vigneau, a daughter of Jean and Elizabeth Vigneau. Vincent Tillou died before September 27, 1709, leaving children--Vincent, John, Ann, Elizabeth, Judith." Hope this helps you. Merry Christmas. Linda
