John Tilburn was born 28 Aug 1822, in Bradford,YKS. England, son of William Tilburn and Ann Cluderay. He married Jane Gill at the College Chapel, Bradford in 1855, and came to Australia with one small daughter in 1857, settling in the Bendigo area, and then taking up land at Numurkah, around 1878. They eventually had a family of 5 girls and 2 boys. The eldest daughter, Sarah Ann, who was my great grandmother, came to western Australia with her own husband and practically grown up family in the 1890's. Any news from relatives of this family would be much appreciated.

Dear Audrey: I know that your William is from a collateral Tilburn line in York. I have corresponded with one lady, "Rainey" in York, who said that her connection to the Tilburns began with Ann Cluderay. My William is my great grandfather, born 1835 in PA.; The son of Richard Horseman Tilburn, b. 1807 MA Susan Ennis Jones,b. 1810 PA, William served in the Civil War "Co.D,PA INf." He was discharged after being wounded.
Reenlisting soon after, Wm. was shot in the head, a wound from which he never recovered.
Wm. wandered the streets of Phila., much like our homeless people today, I guess. With no treatment available, our wonderful government paid a pension to his wife who couldn't deal with it. Wm ended his days in an insane asylum. (I suppose that's more humane than what happens to veterans today). Prior to the war, Wm. was a "Stonecutter (1860 C.). I know that this may be unimportant right now, but Wm.'s ancestors were of "gentle birth", and I have his collaterals pretty far back if you're interested. Wm's siblings: Catharine (after Wm's grandmother, Catharine Pindar,b. abt 1880? grandfather: Richard Mayer Tilburn,b. 1868 in York. My family name is Tilburn, and we come from Bradford, Yorkshire and also from the Huddersfield area. My father's name was Leonard and my grandmother's name Mary Ann. I know very little about our family history and if we are part of the family you are asking about and you have any info I would love it if you would email me (or post a message here) Thanks

Hi Valerie (nee Tilburn!) I am delighted to hear from you, as I have never before (I don't think) had a reply from someone of this actual name! In other words, there are usually many marriages away from the name itself.
Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing, yet, just what the connection, if any, is, but I suspect there may be one somewhere.
Would you kindly supply me with your own email address, as I don't seem to be able to see it here. Then we can go into it more fully. Thankyou. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Audrey.( Western Australia)

Having just read the notes on the message board, i too am from the line of Tilburns from York. When looking at my family tree, several of my relatives emegrated to Australia. My relatives ahve lived in Yorkshire for many centuries, and still live in Boroughbridge now. I would be interested if you could get back to me if you have heard of the Tilburns from Boroughbridge, near York
Thankyou

I know this is in reply to a post 8 years ago but I have only just discovered John and Jane Tilburn are in my tree. William, John's father, was born in Dishforth, Yorkshire and I am currently back to the early 1700's with his line. I have a lot to do yet but am delighted to tie the line into Australian Tilburns! My grandmother was a Tilburn so that's why I am researching these people.

Hi John! Delighted to "meet" you!
My great grandmother was Sarah Ann Tilburn, eldest child of Jane and John, as you have probably read here. Would you like to use aflom@iinet.net.au for email address? I am away from home for the next maybe 2, or a bit more, weeks, so contact and information may be slow and limited for that time. However, it seems you are perhaps in England? and I have quite a little bit to share on the Australian family of which I am a part. Looking forward to hearing from you again, and thank you very much for the contact.
I am loathe to give up my old Yahoo address for this very reason, even though it is about 98% spam, and sometimes I forget to look there. I have only looked today and was very happy to find a positive "strike"!
Thank you!
Audrey.
