Tift family of CT, Bahamas, Florida
I am looking for a Lewis Samuel or maybe Samuel Lewis Tift, born in CT around 1833. He moved to the Bahamas at some point and married a woman from there, had children, and moved to Key West. Actually, I am looking for the father of this man, and wondering if he is related to Amos Tift of CT. Any information would be appreciated.

Hello Sheila, I ran across your posting where you were looking for a Lewis Samuel or maybe Samuel Lewis Tift. I was wondering if you had any luck on finding any info out? He was my great-great-great grandfather. My great-great grandfather was his son John and Johns daughter Irene was my great grandmother. Are you related also??? Please email back. Thanks!

Re: Tift family of CT, Bahamas, Florida
Hi - I took a break from genealogy for a while, but am back searching again. I am still looking for the parents of Lewis Samuel Tift. I thought I had emailed you after your last message, but maybe not. My grandmother was Mizpah, Irene's sister. Have you heard anything else about the Tifts in the last couple of years? Hope to hear from you, Sheila

Re: Tift family of CT, Bahamas, Florida
Hi there - this is Mildred "Tish" Rosam. I've joined Ancestry.com to help my Mom (Mildred) with her research. Lewis Samuel Tift was my great-great-grandfather. My great-grandfather was Albert C. I've also been looking for more information on him but no luck yet. We did get a copy of a deed from 1873 from Charles Tift to Lewis Samuel for a house in Key West, sold for one dollar. Has anyone ever found any further information on old Lewis Samuel?

Re: Tift family of CT, Bahamas, Florida
Hi - I'm not sure if I met you one time. When your mom still lived in her house there were some other people when I came to visit. I saw her a few years ago at her apartment. I sent a Christmas card this past year. Is she still at the same address?
I have searched for Lewis for years, even going to Hartford to some state library there. I think he shows up in the 1850 census working on someone's farm - must have been just before he went to the Bahamas. I know your mom thinks that Charles is his father, but is there any concrete evidence on that? Charles would have had to be very young to have a son born around 1832.
I have looked all through some book here on Ancestry, a history of the Pendletons, I think. Anyway, there are Lampheres (with many spelling variations) and Tifts, but I can't find any direct connection to our Lewis. I plan to keep looking, but the past couple of years have sidetracked me. My mother passed away last year after a couple of difficult years and then my brother died just last Monday. I just got back from Florida last night. If things would settle down a bit I could get back on the trail.
By the way, I would be very interested in a copy of the deed, if possible. Can you scan to someplace on Ancestry? I know we can put in pictures and such but I've never done it yet. I must be very technically challenged.
It's good to hear from you. Let me know if I can help on this end. Sheila

Re: Tift family of CT, Bahamas, Florida
Hi Sheila,
Yes, we are still living at the same address. Mama believes that it is Charles as years ago she saw Lewis' death certificate. She got the parents names (Charles Tift and Maud L. Johnson) as well as his cause of death from it. Unfortunately when she contacted the funeral home that had the dc last year, they told her they no longer had the records and didn't know where they were. Seems strange to me they would lose/destroy official records. This was the Lopez Funeral Home in Key West. I may try to contact them again. Mama also checked with the public library in Key West as they have many old records as well but no dice. I have seen the record from 1850 that you refer too - with Rudletons (Pendletons) and a Lamphier at the same address. I thought that this was him as well since he seems to have gone by Sam instead of Lewis. I noticed further back in the Tift/Tefft line there was a marriage between Daniel Lamphier (Lamphere) and Annie (Nancy) Tefft so I figured the family ties were there. Wish one of our great-grandfathers had known/said something more about their father - it would have relieved us of all this digging! LOL I will be scanning the deed (which is hand written on two pages so I will have to piece it together to make one page) as soon as I can and will be uploading to Ancestry.com then. If I find anything out further, I will be entering it into my "tree".
Tish
