Jane (Sarah) Tifft

Surnames: Tifft, Sherman, Higley
The parents/family of Jane (Sarah) Tifft is one of my brick walls. I'm also confused as to whether Tifft should be spelled Tefft, but I haven't found anything further to support that supposition.

Jane m. Arnold Sherman (s/o Jacob Sherman and Lydia Staples) on 2 Feb 1836 in Ferrisburgh, Addison, VT. The marriage records lists Jane Tift and Arnold Shumann.

Jane b. 1813 Huntington, Chittenden, VT; d. 19 Apr 1880; buried Maplewood Cemetery, Huntington, VT

Arnold b. 5 Oct 1806; d. 9 Oct 1874; buried Maplewood Cemetery, Huntington, VT

Jane and Arnold had eight children: Carlos Allen; *Betsey Jane; Emma M.; Anson Tifft; James; Orissa S.; Martin H; and Martha I. * Betsey Jane (b. 1 Jul 1839 Richmond, Chittenden, VT; d. 26 Nov 1880 Richmond, Chittenden, VT) was my gg grandmother.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have any indication of where/when Jane was born? The original name seems to have been Tefft but certain branches changed to Tifft, Teft, Tift, etc.

Hi Ellen,
Sorry, you did say that already! I missed it.

My gr gr gr grandmother Sarah Ann Tifft b. RI c. 1793, dau. of Samuel Tifft of Smithfield & Johnston, RI, married Russell Steere and settled in Littleton, NH; so the VT part caught my eye, though. Sarah had a brother Laban Tifft, who also settled in Littleton, NH. She had other brothers, but I don't have info on their families yet.

I just thought I'd throw that out there as possible connection; the known brothers for which I have no info are:
Samuel, Thomas & Peter Tifft.

It appears that the son Peter Tifft (brother to Sarah Ann Tifft Steere) may have settled in Swanton, Franklin Co., VT during the early 1800's. Later possibly in Highgate, Franklin Co., VT. I see some family trees that list his death in Morristown, Lamoille Co., VT in 1859.
It doesn't seem like he is your Jane's father, but interesting that he went to VT...maybe it will lead to something! I haven't been able to find anything on the other brothers yet...
Probably no connection, directly, but it's information. You never know what may turn up.

Hey Ellen, have you ever tried the Tefft Family Association?
http://www.geocities.com/tefft_family/

their website doesn't seem to have had any activity in a while but if you look at their newsletters, there is contact information. It might be worth a shot...

Yes, I have but did not find any information that would help me. I think I also contacted them a few years ago with no luck.

I'm trying to find a birth record for Betsey Jane Sherman; she is my great-grandmother. I also came to a brick wall where Sarah Jane Tifft is concerned--her parents were William and Betsey Tefft--she was born in Chateaugay, Franklin County, New York. However, tracing her further was impossible; I've checked every William Tefft with a wife Elizabeth, Beth, Betsey and can't seem to match her to any of them. Sorry.
