I am searching for any information that someone may have regarding the Tifft family. My Grandmother left some notes with names -- but not very complete. Here is what I have:

She believes the Tiffts were Puitans from England and lived in New England during the Revolutionary War (mentions a Matthew Tifft born in England in 1761 who came to Vermont-- perhaps the father of Charles?)

Charles Tifft m. Jane Chase they had 4 daughters + 3 sons (do not have all the names). They came to the Western reserve by Ox cart and settled in Cleveland, Ohio later moved to Cuyahoga Falls. Charles lived in Vermont and then later moved to Oxnard, Connecticut.

Mark (Markus) Tifft m. Julia Randall
They had four children : Clara Lena, George (Geo?), Jenny and Claude

Clara Lena Tifft m. Harry Elmer Wills
They had two children Irvin and Julia

Dear Jill,

I am a descendant of Ohio / Connecticut / most probably Rhode Island Tift / Tifft / Tefft ancestors. Please to to the RootsWeb Tift message board for the reply I posted today to a question form Jerry Stewart.

I will be working on migration information and will someday (?) post it to www.migrations.org, as there is not much about the Tift migrations from Connecticut to New York to Ohio to Michigan to Illinois to Nebraska to Wyoming, where I have discovered direct and collateral Tift ancestors of mine.

If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Respectfully,

Virginia Lee

Hi there,
Not sure if you still are checking this but, My name is Sarah (Tifft) Pennefeather and I live in upstate New York. My father has a book that he optained from my grandfather Norman Tifft that has alot of lineage of the Tifft name. I could get a hold of the book and see if I can help in anyway. I myself am very interested in learning my family geneolgy. Thank you
Sarah Tifft Pennefeather

If you are still interested in Charles Tifft and Jane Chase, I have the following information. In a newspaper in Oswego County, New York, I found the following:

"Edwin Chase left for Cleveland, O. today to visit his sister Mrs. Jane Tifft, who has been ill for several months." [Oswego Daily Times Express, 20 June 1885, p. 8, col. 1]

Edwin Chase and Jane are children of Joshua Chase and Polly Hackett.

The Edwin Chase that you referred to is NOT the son of Joshua Chase and Polly Hackett. The Edwin Chase that visited his sister is, I think the son of Joseph Johnson Chase who lived in Cayuga County, NY and is buried there. The other Joseph Johnson Chase, who lived in and around Hannibal, Oswego County, NY also had an Edwin but he is also NOT the Edwin Chase you referred to.

I checked out the Jane/Edwin Chase connection some time ago, hoping that Edwin was the son of Joshua and found that was not the case.

I find that I was so wrong in my earlier posts. Jane Tifft was Jane Chase and in her genealogy she named her brothers and sisters. And this included not only her brother Edwin Chase of Oswego but my brickwall of 25 years - my great grandfather Joseph Johnson Chase 1819 - 1871 as her brother also. And yes their parents are Polly Hackett and Joshua Chase

My apologies to everyone!!!!! Now I am searching for the probable Bible from which the info was taken to see the handwriting myself. Was there a Martin Chase as a brother?
