I wondwered if anyone has done a study on the Tiffins in Cumberland and whether they were all related to Adam Jonathan and Henry who crossed the water. I am struggling to research my family. I am ggg granddaughter of John Tiffin descended from a series of John Tiffins and JOHN wILLIAMS originally from Dalston born 1796 and 1808, 1827 and 1866 but would appreciate any other contacts.

I've been trying to sort these Tiffins out for over 20 years. Its seems that most of them in Cumberland were related to each other, from what I can tell. They are a bit hard to sort out though. I only know my line back to Henry Tiffin and Mary Tiffin who came over to America from around Workington in 1783. Others before that are a guess. One of our west Texas Tiffins has done some research in England and Scotland that indicates that the Tiffin bunch came to England from Scotland about the year 1200 and before that they were in the Orkney Islands. One problem is so many of them seem to have the same names! I have never figured out where my Henry and Mary came from before Workington. There were other Tiffins there around Workington before them, but not too many generations.

Thanks for the reply anyway. It seems that some of my branch the John and william Tiffins from Sebergham later Oughterby may have been quakers so I may be able to find furher details from their websites/establishments.
Will let you know if I get a link to Henry and Mary of Workington.

I have a feeling that most Tiffins in Cumberland are/were related. They seem to mostly have come south from Scotland around the year 1200 and before that from the Orkney Islands.
One of my cousins in west Texas got that information from a researcher (a lady in her 80's in Inverness) some years ago. Sounds like they were Norse before Orkney.

Hi June,
I don't think I can help much but my Tiffins were from Cumberland as well. Unfortunately I only know about four generations in England going back to about 1730 as my GGrandfather immigrated to Canada in 1858. Both he and his father William were born at the famous farm Moorland Close near Brigham and Cockermouth. His grandfather Joseph was born at Brigham but where Joseph's father Isaac was born is unknown. I know what you mean about repetitive names as we have loads of Johns, Josephs, Williams, Reubens, etc. Unfortunately there is little hope of my ever being able to do any in depth research in local records as I am too far away. You are welcome to have a look at my web site if you think any of the information might help.
