I am a great great granddaughter of John Arthur Tooke and Anna Nixon Vickers too. My great grandfather is James Allen Tooke. Do you know of a James W. Tooke who served in the 12 Regiment Louisiana Volunteers along with James Allen. He is not a brother. Perhaps a cousin? His name is James W. Tooke, Private Co B 12th Louisiana Infantry. His place of residence was given a Bienville Parish.

Yes, he is the original James Wimberly Tooke, son of James Jefferson Tooke and Sarah Wimberly. He is on p. 54-55 of the Tooke book. Born May 22, 1834 in Talbotton, Talbot, Co., Ga., died March 28, 1902 in Bienville Parish, La. and buried in Arcadia cemetery. He moved to Louisiana in 1856. He first served in the 9th La. volunteer infantry, then was transferred to Co. B of La. infantry volunteers under Col. Thomas B. Scott at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He acted as quartermaster and fought in the battles of Champion Hill, Jackson, and others. Was paroled at Shreveport in 1865. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much. Hugh Simmons, who keeps a database and website about the Louisiana 12th Regiment sent information about my great grandfather, James Allen Tooke's military record and wondered if James W. Tooke who served in the same Regiment was a brother or cousin. It seems he was a cousin? I believe I received a letter and beautiful picture from you way back in 2004 but I lost touch. It is good to be in touch again. I hope it is alright if I send him the information in the Tooke book about James W. Tooke. He would love to have a picture of James W. if a digital one is available. If you want Hugh's email please let me know at mary.bourland@gmail.com
