Surnames: TYCER, STANSBURY, NESBITT, WRIGHT, SANDERS, FREEMAN, WHEELER, RAGAN
Ellis TYCER and Rachel STANSBURY are my g-g-g-grandparents. According to Revolutionary War records and other sources, Ellis TYCER was born 04 June 1756 in Northumberland Co., VA. From the Revolutionary War Pension Abstract, Dickson Co., TN Handbook: Ellis Tycer, NC Line Soldier b. 1755 in Northumberland Co., VA; enlisted at Halifax Co., VA. Discharged from service in 1782; returned to Halifax Co., VA and lived there after War; then moved to Wilkes Co., NC for 3 years; in 1792 moved to Davidson Co., TN. He was living in Dickson Co., TN when he applied for his Revolutionary War Pension 8 Jan. 1835. He fought under General Green at Guilford Courthouse, NC during the Revolutionary War and is listed on the courthouse monument for Dickson Co., TN residents who fought in the Revolutionary War.

By or before 1806 Ellis moved to Dickson Co., TN. Son, Lewis TYCER was born in Dickson Co. 10 May 1806. Ellis is also mentioned in Dickson Co., TN Court Minutes 30 January 1807 as part of the "hands" who were assigned to help Robert NESBITT, "overseer of the road from the town of Charlotte leading toward Palmyra as far as John Irwin's Mill."

Ellis Tycer bought 170 acres of land from James Robertson on the headwaters of Barton's Creek. Made 19 Oct. 1811, witnessed by Richard C. Napier and Jon Carick (source: Dickson Co. Handbook). In 1835 a purchase was recorded for Tycer, Ellis, Dickson County, 50 acres, M Dist., bk. 15, pg. 403, Grant #12635.

Census Sources: 1820 Dickson Co., TN, Census Ellis Tycer, Males: 0-10 (1), 10-16 (1), 16-18 (1), 18-26 (1), over 45 (1); Females: 0-10 (2), 10-16 (1), over 45 (1). 1830 Dickson Co., TN Census; Index to Dickson Co., TN 1840 Census, District 8; pg. 212 from Microfilm #704, Roll 520. Ellis Tycer is living next door to his son-in-law, John W. Ragan who married Letticia Tycer in March 1838.

Ellis married Rachel STANSBURY who was born about 1774 in Massachusetts and died sometime between 1830 and 1840 in Dickson Co., TN. They were probably married sometime in the 1790's prior to Ellis moving to Dickson Co., TN.

Children of Ellis and Rachel are:

1. Unknown Son Tycer, born Bet. 1794 - 1797.
2. Martha Tycer, born 07 October 1798 in TN; died Aft. 1870 in Wayne Co, TN, married John Nesbitt.
3. Unknown Son Tycer, born Bet. 1802 - 1804.
4. Lewis Tycer, born 10 May 1806 in Dickson Co., TN; died 16 June 1883 in Brownsville, Linn Co., OR, married 1) Sarah Angelina Wright; 2) Frances Jane Sanders
5. Allen Tycer/Ticer, born 1811 in Probably Dickson Co., TN; died in Putnam County, MO, married Perniah Freeman.
6. Louisa Tycer, born Bet. 1813 - 1822 in Dickson Co., TN; died Aft. 1900 unknown location, married Thomas M. Wheeler.
7. Letticia Tycer, born 26 August 1818 in Dickson Co., TN; died Aft. 1880 in Near Dallas, TX, married John W. Ragan.
8. Unknown Son Tycer, born Bet. 1825 - 1830.

The Tycer name means "weaver" in French. Oral history through the family of Louisa Tycer Wheeler (my great-great grandmother) states that Louisa was half French, an educated woman who taught school to help support her family after she was widowed.

There were other TYCER/TICER names in Wayne Co., TN records during the time the NESBITT and WHEELER families were there; however, these men have not, to date, been positively documented as relatives or descendants of Ellis TYCER, although it seems likely that they are somehow connected since the TYCER/TICER name is so unusual.

I also am a great-great-great granddaughter of Ellis Ticer (Tycer) and Rachel Stansbury. Their daughter was Latitcia Ticer, whose daughter was Adelaid Ragan, whose daughter was Susan Alice Mings, whose son was Don Spencer, who was my father. I was born in Gilmer, TX in 1941. I am attaching a recent picture of my first cousin and me at the gravesite of our great-grandparents, Wm. Daniel Spencer and Luraney White Spencer.
