Augustin Ticer / Dowdy census research ??

I went to the Library last night to look up Augustin Ticer and Lucy (Dowdy) Ticer in various census. I didn't get much. CAN ANYONE HELP?

I NEVER could find anything about Augustin in ANY census. After scouring all of the state indexes for Ticer, Ticor, Tiser, Tisor, Tycer, Tycor, Tyser, Tysor, and Tizer, Tyzer, Tizor, Tyzor....YUK.

I even pulled out those GRS CDs my Library owns and performed searches for all states for most years. Unbelievable......However...

There was an "Austin Tiser" in Darke Co OH in the 1830 census and an "Austin A. Tyser" in next door Miami Co OH in 1840. He was born betw 1770 and 1780. However, there was no wife in 1840 and a female (wife?) in 1830 who was born 1790-1800.

I had assumed this was Augustin's HH. However....

In a statewide OH marriage book, I came across...

Austin Ticer m. Susannah Wright Jun 29 1809 Warren Co OH.

I'm no longer sure "Austin" is really "Augustin".

I started doubting whether Augustin EVER was in Ohio (except for a convincing Chatham NC abstract), but I did find ONE Ohio newspaper account..

"New Series" No 42 Vol 1 Friday May 5 1815. Andrew Mack reports that Uriah Gates and Asa Hamilton have appraised a horse found by Augustin Tyzer of Millcreek Township, Hamilton Co.

But Augustin and Lucy do NOT show up in 1820 census....and Hamilton Co is a burned county (of course)

Interestingly, I found the following in census and other records...

1840 Hamilton Co census pg 186
Rachel Ticer (no males in HH) - 000001001

In other words, the younger female was born 1800-1810 and the older female was born 1770-1780.

Cinncinatti Daily Commercial 1858-1899 Death Notices
pg 5. Rachel Ticer, notice date 10 Dec 1875, Death date 8 Dec 1875, Age 74 and 7 months.

Rachel Ticer (the old Rachel Dowdy???) was born between 1800 and 1801.

And of course, she doesn't show up in census indexes for 1850 nor 1860.

There is a John Ticer in 1860 Hamilton census and a Jerick Tizer, and a Laura E. Tizer in the same census. I suppose, Rachel could be living in those HHs. I didn't look.

The Ticer name and it's derivations are very RARE anywhere. I even looked under Tice or Tison (and derivations) for Augustin.

The only other marriages are Jane Tiser m. Andrew Voss Dec 19 1820 Hamilton Co OH A-1 400 (which we knew already) and Sarah Tysor m. James Bridges Apr 10 1819 Scioto Co OH.

I looked in 1810 Hamilton tax lists (landowners), Index to OH wills and admins to 1850 (only Gideon Ticer of Clinton OH), and 1812 OH residents (land owner tax lists)......Nothing.

I then started looking back in North Carolina for Augustin to see when he came to OH (at least prior to 1815 we know). But I didn't find him in 1810, 1800 etc. That's when I started looking at other states, and then pulled out the GRS census CDs for all states

CAN ANYBODY FIND THESE TICERS IN CENSUS RECORDS? Thanx

Search a book written by a Mr. Broughton, "The Tysors of Old Chatham". This book was available from his widow about ten years ago and he donated all of his research materials to the Public Library in Siler City, North Carolina.

I am not sure but I believe he was a son or grandson of Lewis Tysor (the younger). There may have been a question as to whether Lucy's last name was "Dowd" or Dowdy". The time frame here is 1770's to early 1800's. There were also some info about migrations to Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana territories. It has been a long time since I read the book, but you will find it of great interest. Good Luck!

Merla:

It has been a long time since your posting and I apologize for taking so long to write to you. I, too, have some some census research on the Tysor/Ticer families but did not find much. I would be very interested to have a copy of the four pages of information you possess on this family. Could you please write to me at ruthmcarthur@comcast.net?

Thanks very much.

Hello all,
It has been a very long time from any of your posts, but if you are still researching and needing help on the Augustine Ticer family, so am I. I am somehow descended from them and I am having trouble finding the exact link. I have a very old hand written paper and an old type written one found in my maternal grandmother's deceased aunt's things at the time of her death. My grandmother always talked about her grandmother being a "Ticer". Turns out her grandmother was Louise Ticer born around 1849 and the paper belongs to Laura C. Ticer born around 1843 and talks about a quilt made by her grandmother (Lucy Dowdy Ticer)and Lucy's eldest daughter (Racel born 1801) and lists some dates, names and when they came to America and a whole list of the children. My problem is that my grandmother's aunt (Lena Ticer Castleman) who died in 1947 had no children and my mother and I are the only living links to that branch and I still have no idea how Louise and Laura are linked...cousins? I can't find anything on either one of them except a few census records for the years 1840 - 1910 which show their birth states. I also have an old photo album full of pictures of people in the 1800's (no names of course) but the photographer add on the back of the pictures say they were made in Cincinnati, Ohio and I know that Augustine and a brother moved there around 1890 where Uriah and some others were born. The writing about the quilt verifies this. I know we are not from Uriah, but which son? The census records for both women show their father's birthplace in Ohio! I know that Laura's parents must have died early because she is shown in th 1850 & 1860 Ohio census to be living with Lucy and Rachel and in the 1870 only Rachel because Lucy would have died. All three census spelled Ticer incorrectly. I know that Louise and Laura are both descended from Augustine and Lucy....but I can't find how. None of the other family trees have the records right enough to help. When I can scan the two documents from Laura's writings, I will attach here.

OOps! I entered the date of Augustine and his brother migrating to Ohio incorrectly. I said it was around 1890 but I meant to say 1809 about when Uriah was born.

Merla,

If you are still following this forum, would you get in touch with me? I am in contact with a descendant of Austin Ticer, probable brother of Augustine.
