Thurgood/Thorogood in Carlton, Cambridgeshire and Little Thurlow, Suffolk and Chesterfield, Derbyshire

I have traced back my Thurgood family from Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Carlton, Cambridgeshire and Little Thurlow. My earliest known event is my 4xgrandfather Thomas baptism in Little Thurlow as the illegitimate son of Mary Thorogood in 1797. Her brother was Thomas Thorogood who seems to have had a prolific line stretching to Australia. As far as I know, noone has found anything prior to their father Thomas's generation.

Years ago, I started a DNA project on Familytree DNA with my father's DNA hoping to find out more info about his "blood" grandfather, but nothing has come of that probably due to the fact that noone else has submitted theirs! If anyone is interested, please contact me. It's cheaper than ever and easy to do. If you have reservations - let's talk!

If there is anyone out there interested in the Thurgood/Thorogood's in Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and/or Derbyshire please contact me.

Happy hunting!

Lesley in Ottawa, Ontario Canada

Hi, Heidianne,
Thanks for responding to my message, which I'd posted many years ago. Since then I've built a tree which contains literally thousands of THURGOODs. The one you mention, William Lawrence, died on 16 Aug 1896. He drowned in the River Lea at Stamford Hill, Hackney at the age of 46. At the time he was a Carman, and lived at 66, Moneyer Street in Hoxton, London.

All the best,

Johnny Wilks

Hi, I have William Lawrence Thurgood born abt 1851 married to Eliza Ann Burman. I have him living with his Father also William Lawrence Thurgood in the 1871 census but after that Im having trouble finding either him or his wife Eliza in 1881 onwards. There is a William Thorogood married to Eliza but would this be the same Man? I know names changed but I am unsure if this is him or not. Maybe his death was before 1891?
Regards,
Heidi

Hannah married a guy called Abraham Cook in Great Bradley and My branch stems from there. If you have any information you'd be happy to share I would love to hear from you

Tom Sanderson

Can you give us an idea of dates, and for Caroline particularly, where was the church she was baptised at? Have you found them on the Census?

You will find that Thurgoods often appeared as Thorogood and other similar spellings so it can be tricky to track them down - so give us as much factual information as possible please!

Pippa

Well, they're not at 1 Tachbrook Mews on the 1871 census; there's a family called Berwick there who look unlikely to be connected.

Also not with Henry Lower as he is still with his first wife Mary A.

So if E Edwards registered Jacob's death, presumably that is Emma, so you have the address where she was living when Jacob died.

If Caroline's birth date is correct on her birth cert, then I would think the reason Emma lied about Jacob being the father was to spare her daughter from the stigma of illegitimacy.

But also it is possible that Caroline was really born a few months earlier, Jacob was her father, but Emma didn't get round to registering the birth within the 6 week limit and so she gave a false date of birth to bring it within the 6 weeks.

As for why two children in the 1850's and then no more till 1870, it could be that she had some others who died young or were stillborn, or it could be that Jacob and Emma didn't want any more children and managed to avoid having any (or wanted more but had fertility problems) until Caroline came along, or of course the date of birth is correct and Emma had met a new man soon after Jacob's death. I suppose it's even possible that Emma jr could have been Caroline's mother, and Emma sr lied about who both parents were on the birth registration to legitimise her!

I'll have another try at finding them on the 1871 census now.

I have Jacob's death certificate. He died of cancer exhaustion at St George's hospital on 4th June 1869. His occupation is listed a bricklayer. E Edwards was present at the death and lived at 22 Rochester Buildings, Westminster. The death was registered on 10th June 1869 in the registration district of St George Hanover Square, Middlesex.

Caroline Elizabeth Emma Edwards was born 15th June 1870 and I have her birth certificate. Her father is listed as Jacob Edwards (deceased) and his occupation was bricklayer. The mother is Emma Edwards, formerly Thurgood. The birth was registered on 20th July 1870 by E Edwards, mother, of 1 Tachbrook Mews, Pimlico. It was registered in the registration district of St George Hanover Square, Middlesex.

All the other information that you have mentioned is the same as I have. What I can't understand is why she would lie about who the father is. She married Henry Lower in 1874 and I think all the children then take his name.

Why did she have two children in the 1850's and then no more until 1870?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I am trying to prove that my grandfather, George Henry b 1885 was a son of Lawrence Thurgood b 1839 in Gravesnd Kent & Kate Munson Dedham Essex who settled in Orford Suffolk and had 8 or 9 children. My grandfather joined up in 1902 to go to South Africa in the 2nd Boer War, and on his return settled in London, Peckham. His regiment was the Queens Surrey. I hope you may have a link.
Cheers, Annie.
Hi I am researching Thurgood for my friend. His ancestor was Robert William Thurgood. I couldn't find him in the 1881 and 1891 censuses. From army records state his birthplace - Gravesend, Kent. His marriage certificate shows his father name - Robert William Thurgood. I couldn't find anything further than that.

from Andrew Plaster

Hi Annie,
I have some knowledge of your great grandfather Lawrence Arthur Brockes THURGOOD and his line back to Phillip THURGOOD in High Ongar about 1689, though I have never managed to connect it with my line. I'm sure there is a link, partly because of the forename Lawrence/Laurence which is common among THURGOODs but uncommon generally. I'd love to know whom your grandfather George married, however, as I've never traced his marriage. It would be interesting to know where his middle name Henry came into the picture, too, as he was not registered at the GRO with any middle name.
Johnny Wilks

I am researching my fathers line of Thurgoods. I am stuck at about 1825 with a marriage of William Thurgood to Sussanah/Susanna/Susan. They appear to have three daughters, Mary, Sarah and Susan. The last two died in the Union infirmary at Bishop Stortford aged 9 and 5. The family lived in Farnham Essex and Mary married Benjamin Warwick in 1844.

The obvious answer is that Jacob can't have been Caroline's father if he died a whole year before she was born! Are you sure it's the right death cert? If so then unless a false date of birth was given on Caroline's birth certificate, Emma was lying about who the father was.

If you want to find out why Jacob died, the cause of death should be on his death certificate. What is the address on the death certificate? Isn't Emma the informant? And what's the address on Caroline's birth certificate?

This is the info from Jacob and Emma's marriage certificate (in the LMA records on ancestry) which I'm sure you have already but may be useful to people who want to help.

Married 25 Dec 1852 St John, Paddington, Middlesex, both full age, Jacob bachelor, bricklayer, abode Praed Street, father William Edwards, bricklayer, Emma spinster, Praed Street, father John Thurgood, bargeman.

Is this the baptism of one of their children?
19 Nov 1854 at All Saints, Islington - Emma, daughter of Jacob and Emma Edwards of 7 Leader(?) Street, bricklayer.

And this one?
28 Oct 1857 Lambeth St Mary - John Walter, son of Jacob and Emma Edwards of 12 St James St., Hampstead Rd, Bricklayer.

In which case, is this them in 1861?
4 Little Chapel St, Westminster St Margaret
J Edwards Head Mar 37 Bricklayer Hants Jetsworth(?)
Emma Edwards Wife Mar 28 Herts Bishop Stortford
Emma Do Daur 7 Surrey Lambeth
John Do Son 5 Middlesex Knightsbridge
Scothes(?)
Hi Ted,

My Mother is a Thorogood from Essex. An old tale passed down the family says that due to a illiteracy the family name inadvertently got changed from Thurgood to Thorogood. Indeed this appears to be true, and it happened in the early 19th c. Our focus is now on the Essex/Herts border teritory surrounding Bishops Stortford. There are more than a handful of Thurgoods in the area in the late 1700s so any information would be gratefully received.

I know this is an eight year old thread but I thought I'd see if you were still out there.

Regards,
Dave Clarke
NZ

James Thurgood was sentenced to death but this was later commuted to transportation for life. He was transported aboard the 'Nile' that left Plymouth on 23 September 23 1857 with 40 passengers and 268 convicts bound for the Swan River Colony, Western Australia(stopping off at Brazil on the way) The voyage took one hundred days, the 'Nile' arrived in Fremantle on 1 January 1858 . I am featuring the case in my forthcoming book 'Victorian Prisons and Prisoners' published by History Press.
