Thanks for the post. That would be my aunt, Mary Sue Thrift, daughter of Lee Shelton Thrift, son of William Colson Thrift, son of Thomas Moreland Thrift. Only met the lady once, when I was 12, at the funeral of my grandfather, Lee Shelton Thrift, in Dallas, Tx. She and my dad, her brother, apparently didn't get along.....
David Thrift

Re : "Not much divergence over a distance of five generations."

Just a minor correction. It's now 6 generations between you and Isham's parents (who may be the most recent common ancestor, may have been William's parents), so as far as the DNA knows it is at least TWELVE (=6 times 2) generations separating the two testees. Each of the two branches descending from the common ancestor had chances to accumulate changes from the DNA of the common ancestor.

Richard
John's 67 marker tests are now in.

Bottom line: genetic distance of 2 between William Thrift of Dinwiddie Co., VA and Isham Thrift of Orange Co., NC.

I reckon that's a match. Not much divergence over a distance of five generations.

Next question: what was the relationship between the two? My starting assumption is going to be that they are not far apart in age, so, either brothers or cousins.

I haven't done any work on William thus far, but I guess it's time to start.

Regards, Bob
Robert L.

Richard, Here's some information on my Great Uncle. He never had any children but named many streets and Developments for his family. I believe the Chesterville was named after my Grandfather Dr. Chester Bird Thrift.

Untied States Department of the Interior
National Park Service

National Register of Historic Places
Continuation Sheet

Maywood Historic District. Arlington County, Virginia(VDHR 000-5056)

Born in Boonesboro, Iowa, in 1873, Hugh Thrift was a veteran of both the Spanish-American War (1898) and World War I (1914-1918). Thrift moved to Washington, D.C. in 1902, and over the next forty years was responsible for eight residential developments in the Washington, D.C. area between 1902 and 1942, including Michigan Park in northeast Washington, D.C. and Jefferson Village in Arlington.
24 Thrift was also the developer for Woodmont, located directly adjacent to Maywood on the north side of Lorcom Lane. Maywood and Woodmont would together become known as “Thrifton Village,” in honor of Hugh Thrift. Thrift married John Harsha’s daughter, Margaret “May,” for whom Maywood is said to have taken its name.
25 During the early development of Maywood, Thrift and his wife lived with John Harsha at 1602 17th Street, N.W. and had his offices in the Union Trust Building at 1405 New York Avenue, N.W. in Washington, D.C.26 Thrift served on the board of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association and the National Mortgage and Investment Company.27 In his later years, Thrift was an active philanthropist and participated in charitable and religious ventures through his participation in the YMCA, the Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Church, and Children’s Hospital.28 Hugh Thrift died of leukemia in 1962 at the age of 89.29

End notes
24 “Hugh A. Thrift, Builder, Active in YMCA, Church,” Evening Star, March 13, 1962, Record Group Maywood
Community Association, Virginia Room, Arlington County Public Library, Arlington, Virginia.
25
26 Silberman and Baker.
27 “Hugh A.
Yeah, there are so many Solomon Thrifts around, it's a real problem ;)

How about this as a possible explanation? Either the kids (William) reached majority, and claimed their inheritance from the administrator (their mom) who, being female, didn't really have title to the property,
Or perhaps less likely, Solomon's wife died at this time, prompting the inventory, and Sarah the executrix may have been one of the children?

Richard

Footnote dot com is another VERY useful subscription site with LOTS of images of historical documents including from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, who they work with.

ancestry dot com won't allow links to their site however.

Terry found several relevant docs there, including a set of 2 military service cards for

William Thrift, Lieut. Col. Lytle's Command, (Caswell Co.) NC. Card numbers 37450663.
Wm. Thrift appears on a list of men Inroled for Capt. Robt.
Terry wrote me offline:
"There is another good book on Ancestry for Caswell County - Caswell County North Carolina Will Books 1777 to 1814, 1784 Tax List, Guardian's Accounts 1794 to 1819 by Katherine Kerr Kendall

"Page 36 - Book B: 424 - Inventory of estate of Soloman Thrift 19 July 1791 by Sarah Thrift, ADM.

"The Soloman Inv was in 1791. Did not say if Sarah was his wife. If the Soloman died 1776, I was thinking that the estate in 1791 might be at too great a distance to be the brother of Abraham. But with the turmoil of those years maybe not."

Re: DNA test results for William Thrift (b. bef 1761), Dinwiddie County, Virginia, USA

This is indeed exciting news, and I await the completed test results with great interest. It was a bit puzzling when my results came in and I didn't match anyone in the Thrift database. But now, perhaps the local milkman is no longer a "person of interest" in the case, as they like to say in the news.

My mother worked on the Thrift lineage for about 40 years -- without benefit of the Internet, which didn't exist -- but never succeeded in getting back beyond Isham Thrift. I took over her work sometime around 1980, and so we have combined about 70 years on the project. She said to me more than once that she believed that Isham's line came out of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, but could never prove it. I think her impression came mostly from elimination of other possibilities.

Apologies for my my lack of participation in the forum recently, I have been tied up with a number of projects over the summer, but when colder weather gets here I'll have a lot more time to spend on genealogy.

Regards,
Robert L.
Re: Abraham Thrift descendants: SC, AL, AR, TX, OK, & CA

Richard Thrift said:
"Abraham & Solomon were in Cook's company together for 3 years in the Rev. war:
http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncrevwar/9thregimentar.htm
Roster of the 9th Regiment-Col. John Williams. The 9th North Carolina Regiment was raised on September 16, 1776, at Halifax, North Carolina for service with the Continental Army. The regiment saw action at the Battle of Brandywine and Battle of Germantown. The regiment was disbanded on June 1, 1778, at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
Name and Rank Company Dates of Enlistment and Commission Period of Service Occurances
Thrift, Solomon, Pt. Cook's 1777 3 yrs. Died 15 June 1778
Thrift, Ab?m., Pt. Cook's 17 Jan. 1777 3 yrs."

I recently ran across a reference to these two in the book, "Tennessee Genealogical Records" by Edythe Rucker Whitley, published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., date unknown. In the foreword it says, "Edythe R. Whitley's 'Tennessee Genealogical Records' brings together in one volume many documents copied from records either at the State Archives in Nashville or at over twenty courthouses. Originally compiled in the 1930s, in a series of eleven pamphlets, this valuable material has never before been available to the general public."

The book is readable on-line at Ancestry.com.

Anyhow, in the chapter "Revolutionary Warrants" is the following paragraph:

No. 1926. Heirs of Solo. Thrift, private in the N. C. Cont. Line; 640 acres; issued 27 July 1785. On the back is a transfer which states on 29 May 1807 that Abraham Thrift was heir to his brother Solomon Thrift, dec., in the N. C. Cont. Line. The transfer was marked "Invalid," because Solomon Thrift had a son now of full age who had sold the warrant to William White, who purchased it in 1795 soon after the son became of age. Lenoir Co., N. C.: William Thrift of Jones Co., N. C., only son and heir of Solomon Thrift, dec., who was a private soldier in the Revolutionary War, who resided in Caswell Co. at the time of his enlistment.

Regards, Bob

Robert L.
Thrift Street, Thrift Road, etc

There are many different places called Thrift Street, Thrift Lane, etc. Just for fun, let's list them, and if possible dig up the details about who (or what) they were each named after.

Bonus points: Mozart's family lived on Thrift St. in London, but the name was later named to Frith St. Usually, in other examples of the names changing, it goes the other way, changing from Frith to Thrift. Why was Thrift St. renamed Frith St?

There was a Thrift Street in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, England. Several cool pictures can be found if you do a web search.

Also in the UK,
Thrift St, North Tyneside
Thrift St, Irchester, Northamptonshire
Thrift St, Wollaston, Northamptonshire
Thrift St, Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire
Thrift Rd, Branston, Staffordshire
Thrift Rd, Heath And Reach, Bedfordshire
Thrift Ln, Cox Green, Windsor and Maidenhead

In the USA,
Thrift Street is in Kingland, GA, due east of the Okefenokee Swamp.
But even closer to the swamp is Thrift St in Folkston, GA.
Nearby is Thrift Rd, Woodbine, GA

Thrift Rd, Blackshear, Pierce Co, GA
Thrift Rd, Garfield, Jenkins Co, GA
Thrift Rd, Cowpens, SC
Thrift St, Greenville, SC
Thrift St, Pittsboro, NC
Thrift St, Madison, VA
Thrift Ln, Hopewell,VA
Thrift Ln, Woodbridge, VA
Thrift Ln, Chestertown, MD
Thrift Rd, Clinton, MD
Thrift St, Gaithersburg, MD

Others?

Richard Thrift
Re: Lucy Thrift / Hughty Perkins 1772-1862, Dinwiddie Co VA, USA

Benjamin Jolly (Bef. 1760-Aft 1731)
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
had a son Colwell P Jolly who married Mary Thrift, daughter of William. Their son, Archibald T Jolly (~1803-1864), married Elizabeth Perkins (d bef 1850). I don't know the relationship between Elizabeth Perkins and Hughty, I would guess his daughter. She was likely born soon after 1803 based on her husband's age.

Benjamin Jolly (Bef. 1760-Aft 1731) left a will which gives items in his Will to:
"my grandson Benjamin M. (note: son of Daniel)
"my son Daniel"
"my grandchild Susanna Spain"
"my son Colwell"
"Colwell's two sons Archibald C. and Benjamin M.
"my grandson Benjamin Jolly, son of Colwell
"Lucy Ann Jolly daughter of Benjamin M. Jolly"
"balance of my estate to my two sons Daniel Jolly and Colwell Jolly"
Executors: Benjamin M. Jolly and my friend Henry Young
Dated: February 24, 1831
Witnessed by:
James G. Young, Hughty Perkins, and Robert G. Young

So it still seems as if Lucy Thrift who married Hughty Perkins was probably a close relative (daughter or possibly a niece?) of William Thrift of Dinwiddie Co. William & Martha were having kids up to ~1798. Mary Thrift was born about 10 years before THIS Lucy, and also married 10 or more years before this Lucy. Lucy could have been Mary's younger sister, IF there is no conflict with the apparent union between Lucy Ann Thrift & unknown Adams. Could Adams have been her first husband who died early?

Richard
Littleton & Benjamin having different mothers explains why the Bible entry calls their children, Fannie May Perkins & William Sydnor Perkins (who married) "half first cousins."

So based on the (approximate) birth dates for the kids reported in the census, Lucy's marriage date is narrowed down to probably ~1828-1829, likely 1828; the second wife may have died related to the birth of Francis.

Richard

the town of Thrift, Georgia, USA

OJ must not be paying attention, or he'd point out that Thrift Rd, Garfield, Jenkins Co, GA is not really in Garfield. It takes off from Elam Rd in the northeast part of the outskirts of Garfield, and turns north northeast. The point where it intersects Highway 23 is a place called Thrift, GA, so small that google maps can't even find it, unless you zero in on it yourself. In Luther Thrift's 1989 book, The Thrifts of Okefinokee, it is mentioned. Shortly after Robert Thomas Thrift's death in 1837, his children moved from Washington County in Georgia to Tattnall County. During their migration they "settled for a short time (probably less than a year) in an area that became known as Thrift, Georgia. In later years, the building of a railroad through the area kept the name alive. Today, Thrift, GA is in present Jenkins County between Garfield and Millen on State Hiway 23."

Richard

If interested, you can find this for sale at various sites including amazon & ebay.

I tried to search for the organization that may have originally put out that advertisement, but no success. If you find anything about the origins, please let us know.

Meanwhile I also came across a tool called a bill thrift which holds a chisel or pick called a mill bill, for dressing millstones.

OK, Here's where the problem is:

The 1850 SC Census Newberry County lists Allen as son of William Thrift. (I don't have good access to census info so I'm relying on what has already been posted.) Terry has done some VERY good research on this Allen, and from what I can see she is probably correct that Allen's full name is Robert Allen Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
who married and moved to Georgia. See Terry's posts
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/THRIFT/2009-02/1234...
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/249/mb.ashx

Others have said that Allen son of William Thrift is the Allen (middle initial T or A) Thrift b. ~1843 in SC who served with the 1 Palmetto Sharpshooters then moved to Shelby NC area, married Linsey Emiline Roberts and had kids including Allen Isaiah Thrift. Here are Allen's family and some descendants:
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op...

I am adding the info to my tree
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&... (William Thrift)

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&... (Allen A. Thrift)

I would like to get YOUR detailed data and bring it to bear on this. Until we see better evidence that Allen who moved to NC is son of William of Newberry SC, I think it would be better to say his father is currently unknown. I think Allen might be in the line of John Thrift (see below) if only because of the repetitive name Allen in that line.
John Thrift b. 6 JAN 1760 in near Petersburg, VA , lived in Cane Creek, Pickens District, SC
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

Similarly I wonder if William Thrift (who has a son, Spencer) might be from the line of Abraham (& Spencer) Thrift, see below. Just speculation. Might be proven by DNA tests.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...

I would like to work out the connections of ALL the Thrift lines in SC and NC. My feeling is that they are all closely related, and further I'm guessing they are related to the Thrifts of Dinwiddie Co VA and to Joseph Frith of York Co VA.

Not to sound too much like a broken record, but DNA tests of male Thrifts would be an incredibly powerful way to make these connections. Are there any Thrifts who are willing to join the Thrift DNA Project to help work this out? We do already have results for a descendant of Isham Thrift of Orange Co, NC.

As Bob pointed out earlier on this message board, it is NOT safe to assume that any of these people descend from Richard Frith of Jamestown. I do feel that in the long term we may find more info about Richard Frith and his English relatives, and that based on THAT information we might eventually use DNA testing to see if any of the colonial lines appear related.

Richard Thrift
There are many Thrifts in Maryland about whom I know nothing, including these two. Can anyone provide more info about these or other early Thrifts in MD?

A List of Non-Associators and Non-Enrollers in Harford County to the l0th September, 1775.
James Thrift ... pd. 2 pounds
Richard Thrift.. pd. 2 pounds

This is from p. 344, History of Harford County, Maryland By Walter Wilkes Preston, 1901, Press of Sun Book Office, Baltimore MD
It is available online via google.books, and is available for download as a pdf file.

I gather that Non-Associators /Non-Enrollers refused to fight or sign an oath to support the war, whether because they were Tories, Mennonites, Brethren, too old, or other reason. Two pounds must have been a hefty assessment.

Richard Thrift
I forgot to mention, John found the Thrift DNA project through Bob Jensen's posted research on Dinwiddie Co Thrifts. So THANKS, Bob.

I should also warn users of Netscape & Opera browsers (and perhaps some others) that the chart at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
may not display properly in their browser of choice. Firefox seems to work OK, but Internet Explorer works best on this, due to quirks in the Microsoft program used to make the chart. If the chart looks jumbled, switch browsers.

Richard

DNA test results for William Thrift (b. bef 1761), Dinwiddie County, Virginia, USA

A few months ago Robert Thrift, a descendant of Isham Thrift of North Carolina, submitted a Y-chromosome DNA test and got a result showing that this line has several distinguishing markers -no one else in the databases was very close. In particular, the Thrift families from northern Virginia and from southern Georgia who had already tested were shown to be unrelated to Isham Thrift. That finding was particularly interesting because several people had made the assumption that Isham Thrift was descended from Nathaniel Thrift of Old Rappohannock Co, VA. The DNA test proved this was untrue, but could not say who Isham WAS descended from.

[Note how important it is to be able to use DNA testing to prove two people are NOT related!]

Others had proposed that Isham Thrift was son of Drury / Drewry Thrift of Dinwiddie County, VA. In looking into this assertion it appears questionable to me, since I can find no clear evidence that Drury was much older than Isham. However I did find that part of Drury's estate was claimed by members of the Snipes family, suggesting some family relationship
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.snipes/316/mb.ashx
The Snipes family moved from the St George Co /Dinwiddie Co VA region to North Carolina, AND had close ties with Isham Thrift's family, so it makes sense that Drury might be related to Isham, perhaps a brother or cousin if not father.

I further found a reference from a period witness that Isham & Drury were brothers, although that statement might be questionable since other statements in the file (Rev War pension application of John Curtis, who claimed to be a cousin of Isham & Drury, and served as a substitute for Drury) were not completely accurate:
http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.thrift/231/mb.ashx

There is no evidence that Drury did have male children. (After Drury's death, and before his wife's death, his land was conveyed to Colson Tucker, husband of Jane Thrift born 1765?, so Jane could be a daughter.) So we apparently cannot test Drury's DNA.

I am excited to say that we have now found one very close match to Isham Thrift: John Thrift who descends from William Thrift of Dinwiddie Co, VA, born before 1761:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
William, Isham and Drury have about the same upper limit for year of birth, so it is possible that they were all brothers or cousins. In fact several other Thrifts from the region, possible relatives, have similar age limits, see
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
Now we need to find and test the male descendants of the remaining patriarchs in this list! In particular we would like to test descendants of
Abraham Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
and John Thrift
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&...
(The others listed do not have male descendants as far as I know, but I could be wrong. Miles and Solomon died in the Revolutionary War. We also need to test Friths from the region, and Thrifts and Friths from England, and from other colonies including Bermuda, Bahamas, Florida, Australia, etc.)

The testing company has only reported results for 25 markers of John's 67-marker test so far. There is only one mismatch out of these 25 markers, indicating a very close relationship. We may have more that can be said in the near future after all markers are reported. But the DNA results thus far clearly establish that the two Thrift lines are related, and each of the two DNA results (and their relation to the available genealogical data) are validated by the other.

The test results are presented here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr... or
http://tinyurl.com/3vjhms/documents/fam_grouping.htm
(The chart includes brand new results for a Frith from Alabama, but that situation is more complex and I'm not ready to post about it quite yet.)

I look forward to discussion or questions.

Richard Thrift
rtx at cox dot net
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...
or http://tinyurl.com/3vjhms
Despite dealing with serious health issues, Bob has been hard at work. Lately he has done extensive genealogical research into the Thrifts of South Carolina, and in particular those of Long Creek and Newberry Co. (Bob feels as I do that the Thrifts of Long Creek, SC are probably closely related to the Thrifts of Dinwiddie Co. VA, and to the descendants of Isham Thrift of NC. I will mention some exciting news on that topic in a subsequent post.)

Details of his research are posted here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~thriftzzfr...

I am grateful for his efforts!

Richard Thrift
Yes. However Isham and Mary apparently lived in the southern part of Orange County which eventually formed Chatham Co. Here's Mike Thrift's observation:

http://www.vagenweb.org/shenandoah/thriftmichaelms.html
"He lived on Terrell's Creek, which exists by that name even today. However, the boundaries of Orange County were readjusted on several occasions so that Isham's land is located in today's Chatham County. The creek intersects State Highway 87 about one mile south of the Alamance County line. It flows east about one mile to the Haw River where it empties into the river. Isham's land was at this intersection of creek and river."

So another possibility is that the claim mentioned above was Isham's. However, to merit 640 acres would require several years' service as a private (less as an officer).

Mike said:
"(re Isham's apparent service in Continental Army): We found three separate pay vouchers for Isham all dated 1783 redeemable in Hillsborough, Orange County. The vouchers were obviously for services rendered in the past as the war ended in Yorktown with the surrender of Cornwallis in October 1781, but no description of the service is proscribed on the documents. We also found further corroborating evidence of Isham's service as a patriot as the Daughter's of the American Revolution registers him as such."

Richard
WOW! Fantastic!

So now, if we can get a descendant of Abraham to join the Thrift surname DNA project, we may be able to prove that BOTH Abraham & Solomon are closely related to William of Dinwiddie Co VA & Isham of NC (we have just recently shown the latter two are related).

I don't understand the location refs, and I wonder about the dates. What exactly happened in Lenoir Co., and when? Was the attempted transfer to Abraham initiated there, or invalidated? WHEN was William Thrift resident in Jones Co, was that 1795 or 1807?

What exactly occurred on 29 May 1807? since Abraham had died by October 28, 1806.

Where was the property? Most NC Revolutionary War bounty land warrants were further west in Tennessee near the Cumberland River (explored by Maj. Tilman Dixon, brother of Henry Dixon & uncle of Wynn Dixon mentioned below), but I think some were in the northeast corner of TN; is this what brought William Thrift to the State of Franklin in 1789?

Your book mentions number 1926 and date 27 July 1785, which matches this ref:
Military Land Warrants Continental Line
These rosters will contain the names of the North Carolina soldiers that fought in the Revolutionary War.
A list of warrants for lands granted the officers and soldiers in the Continental Line out of the Secretary's office.
Number To whom granted and rank Number of acres Service in months Date of warrant Location To whom deeded
1926 The heir of Solomon Thrift, Pri. 640 84 July 27, 1785 James Lee in part for W.
Samuel Newton and Clifford Newton Thrift

I need to get some info., I have a Clifford Newton Thrift- death cert showing birth date as; July 14, 1898. Father: George Thrift and Mother: Ida Luckett. I also see some Family Trees showing his DOB as July 14, 1896 I have a military Registration card for Newton Samuel Thrift--DOB is July 14 1899., Mother is Ida Finchum (which was name after George Thrift died). I have 1900 Kaufman Co. Texas census showing Samuel born Sept 1899., living with Ida Thrift and her father Samuel Luckett. I am confused. Are Samuel Newton (Newton Samuel) Thrift and Clifford Newton Thrift the same person?
