Good Evening.

I am Terry and descended from William and Rebecca Thrift of Newberry on the 1850 census. My great grandfather was George Washington Thrift, William and Rebecca's 2nd son. I come from the 3rd wife, Mary Madora Rankin Clamp. My grandfather was Charley Benjamin Thrift b1899 and named for GW's brother Calvin Benjamin. Charlie was born when GW was well into his 60's and had more children after Charley.

Years ago I could not get past William bc1810/1814. Thought I would try again. I began this time trying to find the younger children on the 1850 with William and Rebecca. I did find Spencer in Augusta, GA and documented he and his family.

I would like your opinion on Robert in Augusta. In 1860 there is a Robert age 16 in Newberry in the HH of Micajai Epps and Robert is 16. Perfect age match to Allen listed with William. More times than the census takers would admit, young boys out working were counted with employers as well as at home.

What led me to this conclusion was the 1880 GA Census for Robert in Augusta.
1880 GA Census, Augusta, Richmond Co.,4th ward, Dist 100, 7 June, 358/364, 701 Marbury
Robert Thrift 37 Mill SC SC SC
Elizibeth 35 GA NC NC
Robert 13 Mill GA SC GA
Abilena 9
Katie 7
MASON 25 SC SC SC home enlargement of heart
Eliz. McCorthen 35 cook
Has anyone seen another MASON? I have not. Based on this, I believe Robert to be Robert Allen Thrift s/o William and Rebecca on Newberry 1850 listed as Allen. Spencer was in this same ward in Augusta.

Then thinking that if Rebecca was still alive she may be near her boys, I searched on Reb* + Thrift. this popped up. You know how family hunters love a good mystery. This was too good to let lie.

1870 GA Census, Augusta, Richmond Co., 4th Ward, 14 July, 116/246, looked like this SC grouping of #246 was in a boarding house or duplex.
Rebecca A-----? 60 Keeps House bSC
Childonia Olive 24 Mill bSC
Sarah A------? 19 Mill bSC
Martha Thrift 21 Mill bSC
Amanda Kirkland 25 Mill bGA
William A-----? 10 no occ. bSC
Now Ancestry has this surname indexed as Alphman. It is so hard to read I am not sure this is correct. They also have William's age as 70. Could be but looked more like 10 to me.
Extremely few Alphmans anywhere. A few Olives in NC. Can you think of another surname that comes close to Alphman? Do you think this could be my Rebecca and a new marriage if she outlived William? A Martha Thrift is here also and her age is close to the age of the Martha just before Mason. I welcome any thoughts.

Thanks for allowing me in and I'm always grateful for any help. I'm 25 minutes from the SC Archives and 35 from Newberry so I can do look ups for you in those areas. I do this while hubby is on the golf course. Terry in SC

Sorry I ignored the most pertinent fact on the 1880 census in Augusta Georgia. MASON is Listed as Brother of Robert!
