I am looking for any information on John Thomson who according to his headstone, was born on August 12, 1793 in Ashkirk Scotland. Unfortunately, no record of his birth can be found there, or for that matter, anywhere else in Scotland on that date.

I believe he was an educated man and came to Canada no later than 1818 where he was employed in the lumber industry in Quebec as superintendent to the mills owned by Sir John Caldwell. He married Isabella Henry of Bo'ness Scotland in Quebec in 1823 and originally lived at Etchemin Mills near Levis, Quebec before moving across the river to his stately home "Westfield" on Ste Foy Road. Later he also owned several of his own mills in in Buckingham, QC and Victoria Cove near Sillery QC. He was in business with his sons Andrew Thomson and John Thomson and he did business with George Hamilton (owner of many lumber mills) of Hawksbury, Ontario. John Thomson's son Andrew Thomson married George Hamilton's daughter Henrietta and John Thomson's daughter Isabella, married Robert Hamilton.

John Thomson was a well-to-do merchant in Quebec and his son Andrew even more so.
This is Andrew's biography http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/thomson_andrew_13E.html

My problem is even though John Thomson obviously came from fairly good stock and had a keen business sense being superintendent of Caldwell's lumber business at only the age of 25, there is simple no information about him.. where he was really born, when he came to Canada and what his family did back in Scotland. I feel the Thomsons in Scotland must have been fairly wealthy to have a son as educated as John Thomson must have been. But no information.

I have tried search for name variations.. Thomson/Thompson.

I see there are numerous people on ancestry who have private family trees that have John Thomson born in 1793 +/-1 year. I will contact as many of them that I can but if you should happen to read this, please let me know if we have a match.

thanks,

Ann
