I am amazed that there is another Charles Thomann!! My Thomann family got here in 1833, landed in Baltimore and then moved to Summerfield, Kansas. They were originally Swiss and then moved to France and lived on Thomann Street in Alsace Lorraine. Thomann means "walkway of the canons"(Priests not boom boom's) and I have been to four Thomann streets in Europe all of which have a Church at one end and a place where the religious people grew their herbs and veggies at the other. When surnames were adopted many took their names from where they lived, Churchill being a good example, Thomann obviously being another. My Mother's family were Brodheads, which meant a broad point of land into a lake in Lancaster, England. I can track them back to 1247. I married Joyce Thompson in 1949. She sadly died of cancer in September 2011. Please contact me at my email address wardog143@verizon.net if you have any questions or comments. I served as Infantry in World War II, Korea and Vietnam so my kids insisted on Wardog. 143, count the letters, means I Love You.

Re: Thomann/Thoman/Thomans??NYC

I've read through this thread and do not think that any of my Thomann's match up with what anyone else has discussed so far, but figured I would add what I know to the conversation.

I have an Anthony & Magdalen Thomann (my 4th great grandparents) both born around 1800 in Alsace. I have yet to determine when they came to NYC or when they were married but all of their children were listed in censuses as being born in NY and are as follows: Joseph (b. 1836), Teresa (b. 1838), Magdalen (b. 1839), Mary (b. 1841), Francis (b. 1842) and George (b. 1848). I have not found the family any earlier than the 1850 census at this stage (where their surname was listed as "Thomances")

Francis Thomann was my 3rd great grandfather and was married to Anna Maria Michel (b. 1842 in NYC) who is sometimes noted as Anna Michaels, Mary Michaels, Mary Michel, etc. just to keep me on my toes. Their marriage is listed as taking place around 1865 but I have not yet gotten my hands on a marriage license. They had the following children, all born in NYC: Francis (b. 1867), Mary (b. 1868), Peter (b. 1869), Teresa (b. 1871), Margaret (b. 1872), Jacob (b. 1874), Henry (b. 1875), Charles (b. 1878), Mary (b. 1883), and Margaret (b. 1885). Note that there are two Marys and two Margarets, I am assuming at this stage that the first Mary & Margaret died early. Starting in the 1900 Census, the Thomann family was living in West Hoboken, New Jersey.

Teresa Thomann was my 2nd great-grandmother and married Frederick Hilb in 1892 in NYC.

Obviously am in beginning stages here and a lot of gaps to fill in, but figured I would share what I had in hopes of finding a connection.

Maxine,

This is all thrilling to me. All my info is from Thomas Gomez' Universal Studio biography and pieces by his publicity agent, Stan Musgrove, as well as from my great-aunt Lee (Leocadia Gomez Smock), Tom's sister. My grandmother was the second of the three children, Helen Gomez Powell. The genealogy is of interest to me, although I am a novice.

I knew my great-grandmother, Ida Thoman Gomez, when I was a young boy,and I may have met Aunt Jo (her twin). My mother has photos of the twins as young women, and they agree with all reports: they are beautiful women. Though the family's name may be German-Alsatian (as opposed to French), my understanding is that they were French-speaking, and culturally French. Creole, in the strictest sense of the word when they arrived in New Orleans.

The story of moving to New York from New Orleans is what links the Thoman and Gomez clans. They went to open a hotel on what is now known as Lady's Mile. Ed Denneshaud was married to one of the Gomez sisters. If you send your email, I will send you the brief part of the Thomas Gomez biog. that deals with ancestry.

I would so appreciate it if you could send me the materials you mention. It is so generous of you. Sorry to be so long...I was in the woods, away from Internet service.

Gratefully,

Greg Hewett
838 Nebraska Ave. W.
St. Paul, MN 55117-3453

Re: Thoman(n)s of NYC
Bingo!! It IS the same family. My mother in law was Hazel Thomann, first cousin of Tom Gomez. They lived in the same neighborhood as kids and apparently stayed in contact over the years. In fact, in the early 60s she just picked up the phone, called Tom and asked if he could arrange for tickets for us to see “A Man for All Seasons” when he was on Broadway. He did and we went backstage after the show to meet him in his dressing room, which was a real treat. From my research I gather that Tom was the son of Ida Josephine Thomann Gomez (twin sister of Josephine Ida) while Hazel was the daughter of James Thomann, all children of Frank and Hannah. Hazel told me that the family dropped the second N during WWI to make the name sound less German.

Here is what else we know: Frank and Hannah had 13 kids. James was #5, Josephine and Ida were further down the birth order. As so often happened, several of those 13 kids died in infancy. On the internet I stumbled on the widow of Frank and Hannah’s youngest child Damas and she had not only photographs of Frank and Hannah but also some documentation of the birth of Francois Joseph Thomann in Wintzenheim, Alsace-Lorraine in April of 1835, It is in Alsatian but I believe she sent a translation (I’ll have to dig it out). Francois was the son of Francois Sr and Marie Agathe (no last name provided). He died in 1916; Hannah died in 1910. On her death certificate it says that Hannah’s father was John and her mother’s maiden name was Mary Clure. If you will send me your address I will make copies of what documents I have and get them to you. I don’t know whether that info will be a help in your biography of Tom but you may find them interesting nonetheless.

Your info re the home town of Hannah was new info to me. Until today we had no idea where she was from other than from Cork, which is a big place. According to Aunt Dorothy Thoman, sister of Hazel, Hannah originally spelled her name Kief. The DOB she had for Hannah (July 1842) agrees with your info but in one of the later censuses her DOB is given as March, 1846. What is the source of your DOB info?

The bit about Frank immigrating to New Orleans and perhaps being in Farragut’s navy is fascinating. The 1900 census says that he and Hannah were married in 1862. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate (NYC BMD records are not indexed before 1864) but there is a record of the birth of a daughter Hannah in August 1864. However I believe there was a son born before her (Charles) in 1863 who died in infancy. If these dates are correct, then it is unlikely that the story about Farragut is true, but obviously more research is required.

Thank you so much for contacting me. You have provided invaluable info and I now have clearer direction for my research.

Regards, Maxine
e-Mail: airportdirect@verizon.net
I've come upon this conversation by accident. I am writing a biography of the actor, Thomas Gomez (born Sabino Tomas Gomez, 1905-1971), my maternal great-uncle (his father had the same name). My great-uncle's maternal grandfather was Frank Thoman from Alsace Lorraine (Francis Joseph Thoman), who, before moving New York City, had emigrated to New Orleans. He may have fought in Farragut's Civil War navy. He married Hannah O'Keefe (1842-1910) from New Market, Ireland. The name and birthplace for her are close to yours...Any clarification?

Sophie and Anna Stuttig were two of her sisters. Other siblings were Edward Walter, Rudy, Mary, Lena, and Charlie. Elizabeth and Dorthea Thomann were sisters.

I saw a post which said that Dorthea Thomann married Alphonse Werder. Apparently this is your Dora.

Hi there, I am looking for information on my great-great grandmother Luisa Thomann. She was born June 25th, 1865 in Bern, Switzerland. Died February 4th, 1950 in Missouri.

I don't know what her father's name is, but her mother's name is Annie. Luisa married Christian Butler in St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri on January 11th, 1888.

They had 7 children before 1900, seeing as how Christian died in 1900 (possibly 1899). The youngest child was born in December 1899.

Luisa's mother remarried to a man named Daniel Slope (sp?), who was from Germany.

Is anyone else related to Luisa?

He in many ways was a role model to me, even without knowing him. I met his wife, although I don't remember her. I was born on Jan. 16, 1969. She died on Jan. 31, 1969.

Yeah, I know...
If it makes you feel better, I just e-mail my mother to get a copy of our tree, it goes back to the 1700's. An aunt made it in the 60's and my generation is the last one there. I'm planning to continue it and if I can dig farther that 1700, I will. When she did it it was in the old fashioned way, asking people, travelling, checking documents... I wish I had the time and money!!!!
Be a good guy and wait. It won't take long.
See you "Cous"

I have no problem, but I'll need some time, all the information I have is in Argentina, there is were Thomas went to when he left Switzerland, so I need to contact My grandaunt (Is that a word?) She is one of Thomas's daughters and she is the one that started all this "trying to get information" about our ancestry. I'll keep in contact with you.

I have no clue about the people you are looking for, but my family comes from the same Canton in Switzerland, my maiden name is Thomann. Is the Thomas Thomann of any use for you, for the dates you are talking about, this Thomas could be a nephew or cousin. He was born in the late 1800's. I have to get the exact data though. Good luck in your search.

Got both messages. No, I don't live in Switzerland. But, I was there last August for two weeks. It was the most wonderful experience! I got to go to the village where my great-grandfather Berger was born (Munsingen, Canton Berne) and Maerwil, Canton Thurgau, where my great grandmother was born. My hostess isn't much into genealogy so I didn't get to do some things I would have liked. I saw most of Switzerland, via back roads and small village hotels (wonderful and cheap), went into Italy, Germany, Austria (spent a day and a half there) and of course, Lichtenstein (had to be told when we went in and went out, there are no borders between them and Switzerland and their laws are interchangable. I still can't believe I was really there. Only disappointing thing is the custom (out of necessity) of Swiss graves only being searchable about 25 years. That was a real shock! But after seeing how little level ground there is in Switzerland I can see why they don't want to "waste" it on graves. The Swiss records are a wonder and if ever families are traced to city of origin and if you can read old German they have everything available. I gave up and hired a Swiss researcher who is wonderful and who became a friend in the process.
By the way, I live in Idaho.

Charles Emil Thomann was my husband's great grand father. All we know is that he emigrated from Switzerland to the U.S. in the late 1800's (1880's?) with his brother. Charles settled in the Boston area and his brother Joseph went to the Philadelphia area. Charles married a woman with the last name of Vuertel (sp?). They had a son Albert H. Thomann. They started a bronze foundry in Medford, MA. Does anybody have any information on Charles and how I can trace our family further back? Any help would be much appreciated as we engage on our search.
