Thibaults...Pirates? Slave traders?

Thibaults...Pirates? Slave traders?

Surnames: Thibault
I am a descendent of François-Louis Thibault(1647 France-1724 Quebec) and Elisabeth Agnes Lefebvre.

It has been told to me that a Thibault ancestor or ancestors of mine had been pirates and slave traders.

Has anyone come across this? As far as I could tell most in my line were farmers. I do know Francois-Louis Thibault was on a merchant ship and I believe it was called The Cat of Holland. This is all I know.

My Thibault goes Francois-Louis Thibault> Jean-Francois Thibault> Jean-Francois Thibault> Michel-Julien Thibault> Michel-Ignace Thibault> Michel-Ignace Thibault> Honoré Thibault> Ernest Thibault> Alfred Thibault> Daniel Lester Thibault> ME

And if anyone has more info on merchant ship The Cat of Holland, please let me know.

Thanks,
Michael Thibault

As far as pirates etc. that is HIGHLY unlikely since Francois Louis married at age 23 in 1670 and settled as a farmer in the Ste-Anne de Beaupre area before obtaining a farm in the Cap-St-Ignace area across the St.Lawrence River. As far as I know all the descendants were farmers. His children all settled in L'Islet, where many later descendants also settled.

Other, unrelated Thibaults went directly from France to Haiti and Martinique and later moved to New Orleans after the slave revolutions. It is possible that some resorted to slave trade

WE must have been in contact some time earlier since I am also originally from Salem MA and I have your wife's name and your 3 children.

Michael,
I am also a descendent of Francois-Louis and Elisabeth. my descendents follow the same line up to the Michel-Julien>Prosper>Michel>Michel. I have not come across any info about them being pirates or slave traders. By any chance do you have any info on Odelia Dupuis Thibault wife of Michel Thibault? She was my great grandmother and I can't seem to find anything about her death or where she is buried. Any help you could give me would be appreciated.

The pirate/slave trader thing came from my grandfather...I don't know where he got it from, but unfortunately he's no longer with us, so perhaps I'll never get the answer.

All I could find for Odélie Dupuis Thibault was that she was the daughter of Anicet Dupuis and Julie Mercier. Born on 2/4/1847 in Deschaillons, QC. Married Michel Thibault 8/11/1885 in St-Jean-Baptiste, QC

I am a direct descendant of the Thibaults (from Paris) who were colonists in Haiti. In June 1792, during the slave revolt, they arrived in Philadelphia where they became silversmiths (Frances Adrian Thibault, sons: Francis, Frederick, and Felix). A branch of the family, settled in Little Rock Ark. where in 1849 they (Henry and Felix Thibault, brothers) boarded a wagon train for California and the gold rush where they were among the few miners who struck it rich. Felix took a slave named Jordan with him. Jordan died on the way to California. They did own slaves, but I have no records of them ever being involved in the actual slave trading market.
